Gliding Over
Leong Continues
Grilled recorded a solid two-nil victory over Algerian Division Une club GLV, who put their impending relegation behind them by running a hardworking 4-5-1. It was an extemely experienced midfield that came to The Cooking Pot, with captain Anton-Michael Pihl and helper Moisis Psomas both north of thirty-five, though even they were junior to Spanish setpiece specialist Luis Vara, at 37 years young.
The match began without substitute
Hilal Bakhtiar, who was later found to have been stranded after his car broke down, but otherwise it all went as planned for the hosts.
Shiya Shaahee was an unfamiliar face at rightback, but the Maldivian once again suggested that Grilled would miss him, as he hooked up with
Chow Ying Lee once more to feed the latter in the 13th minute.
Mohd Safri bin Mohd Kassim, who had been sent off not too long ago, raised hackles with a leg in on Vara that was perhaps a bit more violent than it had to. This was not taken well by the visitors, and Anders Bergkvist struggled to restore order before serving Mohd Safri with a yellow and a last warning.
GLV's navy and white remained reluctant to venture forth, and
Leong Wan Kang upped Grilled's lead to two. The up-and-coming striker dodged behind Fouad Zitouni just as
Tian Yonghang's lob overhead came in, and appeals for offside were ignored as Leong slipped it past Paulo Estêvão Maranho cheekily.
The Birds didn't have it all their own way, as GLV were always on the lookout for Siamak Razavi, who was hanging out on the right. The Iranian forward's patience finally bore fruit when he was reached by a sweeping sixty-yard ball, but despite doing well to shake off
Walter Ross, he faltered at the last step.
That was largely the story of the second half, as Grilled strengthened their hold whilst disappointing in front of goal. Chow could however hardly be blamed as he made an opening entirely by himself on the left, only to rush his shot high.
It was more painful for Psomas, who could well have tied it up had he converted both of his excellent opportunities, but the first was put wide, while Noubaryan saved the second.
Colby Awyong and
Gleb Dorogan came on towards the end but contributed little, as Grilled saw the game out.
