Peeking Into The Future

Grilled's traditional end-of-season function was shifted to Sunday night, with head coach Niculae Stanca tasking the squad to scout their future opponents in their qualifiers, as a show of how serious he has become about the title. As it was, Rapala FC were supplanted by Jurong side AdidasFC despite the latter somehow starting with only nine men, with 21 year-old hometown darling Robert Tse ringing up a hat-trick.

"While their best players didn't make an appearance, probably since they were sure of beating a weakened Rapala, AdidasFC have tended to field a very solid 4-5-1." Stanca noted. "They have a pair of very threatening wingers in Berke Tarı and Viorel Chelu, while Finnish playmaker Marcus Nisshall did the organizing. However, they've sold off most of their squad for about S$26 million, so we won't know what they're planning until they get personnel in."

Young Tigers kept their spot handily, meeting little resistance in hammering challenger Starbird United 4-0, though Swiss striker Charles Coiffier overstrained himself in the process of scoring. -= Manchester United =-, whom Grilled contested three tournament matches against recently, and another Jurong side in UNITED SKANKS make up the eight.

"Manchester edged clubs such as Dodogado and Shining Lights with a very flexible dual gameplan, and they can either put up a suffocating 4-5-1 or attacking 2-5-3 depending on their needs, which is very impressive. Although Daniel Höllriegel has left, they retain a group of versatile stars. SKANKS on the other hand prefer to play their own game, and South African free-kick specialist Jabulani Nxumalo is one to beware."

There were some red faces as it turned out that Grilled would face Yew Tea and not Yellow Buggies as thought, but Stanca didn't read too much into the miscalculation. "Well, they're even more like JUtd than I expected, and I don't need to go into the quality they have all over, but we're up for it."

The club dinner itself was a relatively tame affair compared to previous editions, despite the minor surprise which accompanied Zhu Changchun being named Player of the Season, instead of favourite Tian Yonghang. Tian was gracious enough as he helped his teammate, who was still on crutches, on stage to receive the award, to applause all around.

The Young Player of the Season prize again went to an academy boy, but this time it was wholly expected, as Fang Tong Rong not only got the trophy, but also a honorary Number Nine shirt. The prodigy again shone but just failed to score in the Wings' 2-0 win over Dead Poets Society, though he did leave with a fitting assist for longtime pal Chew Long Lai.

Fang is now open to offers, and Stanca agreed with the general consensus that the Wings will not see his like for some time. "He smashed the youth scoring record while leading the team." the obviously impressed head coach noted. "While I've heard good things about new midfielder Oliver Wing, the Wings will not be the same without Fang. But he has a much bigger stage awaiting him."
