Harimau Hunt
Safri Sees Red

Grilled's second place confirmation will have to wait after they were mauled 5-2 by Young Tigers at the Kandang Harimau, no thanks to Mohd Safri bin Mohd Kassim collecting his first dismissal in nearly four seasons, and midway through the first half at that. The Birds were already one down against a fired-up Tigers side then, and although his strikemates were able to get theirs back, there was no stopping the hosts more than matching that.
With the first meeting between the two ending 4-0 to Grilled, Grilled were upbeat on the bus ride to Toa Payoh, particularly with the Tigers not having enjoyed the best of campaigns. In fact, their narrow win against SKF F.C. last weekend was on the end of three straight league defeats, but Polish captain Paweł Sucharzewski, who coincidentally is their latest signing, despite being at the Kandang for just shy of two seasons, had promised improvements.

Grilled were largely unchanged except for more experimenting with the defence, as Rashid bin Ahmad continued to wait it out on the bench as fellow former national U-20 fullback Liang Liyong got his second start in three games. Unfortunately for Liang, he wouldn't win this one either, and his rustiness was exploited in the 16th minute when Donnie van der Ven blew him away with his agility to zip off for the opener.

The Birds were still very much in the kicking, and things were beginning to get promising when all hell broke loose in the middle. Mohd Safri, in the thick of things as usual, didn't take it well when Zülfikâr Ayaydın's elbow caught his face as both went up for the ball. In fact, he went absolutely berserk after picking himself off the ground, and went at Ayaydın, swinging wildly.

It was all Zhao Jing Wei and lu Zunwen could do to restrain Mohd Safri before any true damage was done, but there was no way English referee Tom Harsch could let Mohd Safri remain on the pitch after an outburst like that. Niculae Stanca personally arrived to escort his disgraced star turn into the tunnel for a cold shower, as the teams' respective skippers sorted things out on the field.

The hostility continued to simmer through the half as Tigers sought to maximize their man advantage, although they didn't shy away from delaying tactics as needed. Gerard Dinger for example nonchalently nicked the ball a few feet away as Zhao was setting up a quick free-kick, which nearly led to more fisticuffs before Chow Ying Lee of all people stepped in to defuse the situation.

That wound up to be enough to throw Grilled off, though, as the kick was intercepted and sent deep into the Birds half. Liang's nightmare continued as he struck it on the volley where he last saw Qassem Madaini to be, only to realise to his horror that his captain had moved up in anticipation. Paweł Sucharzewski had taken a gamble as he had dashed down the middle just in case that happened, and it paid off big time as he netted for 2-0.

Grilled needed a goal if they were to stay in it, and fortunately they still had two very good forwards to do the plundering. Chow drew upon his reserves of speed in the 35th minute to blaze past Sucharzewski after some dreamy dribbling from Tian Yonghang attracted two defenders to himself, and he proceeded to knock it past Michaël Hautin after a slight stumble.

It was still an uphill battle for the Birds, and after dressing room deliberations during the break, Stanca sent out an unchanged formation hoping to get an equalising goal before making adjustments. The Birds huffed, but the Tigers were simply not troubled sufficiently to keep them back, and Ayaydın dug Grilled deeper in the hole in the 64th minute with a good release in the 64th minute.

There was then a hullabaloo in the away stands when Sucharzewski sliced down Chow after the Grilled speedster appeared to have shown him a clean pair of heels some distance outside the penalty area. A red card seemed certain, but Harsch was of the opinion that Constantino Largoet was still able to chase back, and therefore chose to give the yellow instead.

While this still means that Sucharzewski will not be available for Tigers' important upcoming decider against Zambree, it still meant that Grilled's hopes of fighting back on level terms were dashed. It didn't help that the home team promptly widened their lead through Aníbal Vieira, after several earlier close calls from van der Ven.

There would be a bit of vindication however as Tian Yonghang made Ayaydın look silly in the next minute with an outrageous bit of skill, throwing off the big Turk by dashing forward without the ball, before hopping in reverse, dragging it in the other direction with his back foot and scooting off before Ayaydın managed to right himself. You won't see that one in too many training handbooks!

Tian's invention brought him his eleventh league goal of the campaign, and as things stand he will be the first player to defend the II.2 scoring title since national legend Roshadi bin Che Rusli of newbies are newbies eleven seasons ago.

Ayaydın did almost purge his embarassment immediately with a raking long shot that clipped the crossbar, with Donnie van der Ven doing the honours eventually in the 80th minute with a speculative effort from a tight angle. A less-than-pleased Shiya Shaahee then finally got his five minutes of play, but never looked particularly motivated to help turn things around.
