Showing The Ropes
Fang Feted

In what will in all probability be his only match for the Grilled senior side for a long time, if ever again, Fang Tong Rong's hype was tempered as he discovered just how far he had to go before being mentioned in the same breath as his three predecessors, all of whom scored in a roller-coaster 4-5 loss to newly-promoted Tanzanian Premier League side Seychelles Islands.
Already the subject of at least one confirmed bid, Fang received thunderous applause from the discerning home fans as he emerged from the tunnel wearing the Number Nine jersey made famous by former stars such as Domenik Bögengang and Subri bin Ku Zainol. With Mohd Safri bin Mohd Kassim and Chow Ying Lee alongside him, there looked every chance that he would get a very popular debut goal, which however eluded him.

This could not be laid at the feet of the visitors, who gamely eschewed defence in favour of an even more dynamic 2-5-3 than Grilled's, with red-hot Italian midfielder Giulio Claverini marshalling them. At the front, Ally Akukweti and Shaaban Mhagama led the line having just put their national U-20 stints behind them, and would produce constant headaches for defender of the day Djan Bacelar.

Bacelar's discomfort at having to shadow the seemingly boundlessly energetic pair was amply illustrated in the tenth minute, when he basically stood down as Mhagama eased past on the right side. This sloppiness could not help but be carried over to the rest of the team, none of whom thought to stand close by Petter Lindahl when Quentin Scholtzhauer's disguised free-kick went to him, causing the second goal.

Lindhal however missed a far easier chance when a corner fell to him in the very next minute, and things appeared to be on the upturn for the Birds as Abdul bin Jantan put in a cross at just the right height for Mohd Safri to thump in with his head. Not only that, the temperamental Frederick Khalfan collect his second yellow card straight after that for continually remonstrating with the referee, but Grilled were unable to take full advantage as Bacelar's usual guile deserted him on a breakaway.

It was Seychelles who put themselves further ahead by half-time, courtesy of a flash of inspiration from Mike Kijiko, who flung himself backwards to hook a nothing pass over Noubaryan. Kijiko, who usually plays up top but was fielded as a wingback for the match, was over the moon at that, which was so inventive as to be appreciated by even the home fans.

The second half had far less fireworks, as creativity levels dipped wholesale. Woon Shun An provided the only gasp in a boring half-an-hour when he declared an effective range of over thirty metres with a screamer that Raphael Zambi, another former national U-20 forward having his day in goal, palmed over with some effort.

Mhagama was more successful with a similar attempt from slightly closer in to make it 1-4, after which a double substitution was made by the visitors. The switch spoilt Seychelles' flow more than might have been expected, however, and Chow Ying Lee swept in from the right, vaulting Kijiko's tackle before sliding the ball past Zambi, oblivious to the crowd exhorting him to center it for Fang.

Mohd Safri then cracked a third in as Grilled looked poised to snatch the game, but substitute David Zitto earned Seychelles some breathing space with a smart finish, as Grilled were themselves reorganizing after Gleb Dorogan replaced Djan Bacelar. Though Tian Yonghang ensured that the spectators stayed until the final whistle with a cheeky body fake to send Zambi the wrong way, the visitors saw the win out by taking it to the corner flag in injury time, in a competitive ending.
