Crashing To Earth
Three straight losses in the second full day of the Supporter Week Tournament informed the Birds of just how much they had to make up, as they never seemed to match up to their sprightlier opponents. The continued absence of
Valentin Batâr from his injury in the qualifier might have made it look worse than it might have been, but there was no hiding the squad's weaknesses either way.
With
Clark Won also counted out,
Yuki Irie made his return to a midfield role, but could not quite hit full effectiveness. The day's opener against Romanian Division Four side F.C RapiD admittedly saw some bad fortune for the Birds, with a stumble by
Gene Filippone followed by a dubious penalty call.
Neeraj Muthyala would reduce from a corner, but Marcelo Berto made it 3-1 with a superb second-half effort.
They got slightly closer against French Third Division club FC Vantoux, but Swedish central midfielder Staffan Grundblom's brace neutralised goals from
Yuki Irie and
Low Aik Jia, en route to a 3-2 result. The less said about the one-sided contest against Danish Third Division side Ulfborg BG the better, as the Danes served up vengeance for their fallen countrymen from the first day, with a 6-0 whupping.
"It was a good dose of reality." team captain
Tian Yonghang, who was rotated out in each of the games to save his legs, said. "We're not in a particularly great spot right now, in terms of player mix, but the younger lads in particular fought on. Hopefully we snag a couple of wins tomorrow to make up for this."
The Bunnies would in contrast remain unbeaten throughout today, with one-all draws leading into a comfortable 4-1 win over Italian Division Seven participants Blaue Kühe, in which
Daniel Nguyen polished off two sharp counterattacks. Nguyen also struck against Spanish Division Six club diodenales f.c., while an
Enzo Paolo Panzarino free-kick special gave the Buns the lead against German Division Six side FC Northeim United before that.
