Payoh 3 - 1 Grilled

Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and HDB Stadium saw a crowd turnout of 56104. Akin Okon was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Fernando Ortuno García and Jesus Martins Pinho Gomes. The following players took the field: Stanoiev - Pukl, Morgado, Abbeloos - Usik, Fernández Löbbe, bin Hj Erywan, Riihiniemi, McCandless - Tong Leong, Lim.

The following players had been chosen: Dob - 中北 (Nakakita), Trung Quá - Künzler, Davlatov, Mohammad Harun, Xin Lee, Romijn - Mudaliar, Ze Han, Parvathaneni.

Mia San Toa Payoh entered the field in a 3-5-2 formation. The visitors, Grilled Birds, chose to start the game with a 2-5-3 lineup. Grilled tried to focus their attacks down the middle, taking advantage of their magical level with that tactic. Grilled had several good opportunities to take the lead, especially 11 minutes in when Cyril Künzler came up alone against Gheorghe-Daniel Stanoiev who managed a block. Azrinuddin bin Hj Erywan went down after twisting his left ankle in minute 23, but was able to continue the match none the less. Payoh fans held their breath as Gevanni Abbeloos scampered down the left side. He successfully avoided all challenges and cracked home the shot for 1 - 0! After 31 minutes, Payoh sent a free kick in high over the penalty box. In what looked like a well-rehearsed move, the ball was headed backwards and reached Jerry Lim, who had plenty of space to place a well aimed shot - 2 - 0. Payoh's Tan Tong Leong saw his fine effort strike the top of the bar following some good work up the middle by his teammates after 36 minutes. A great save by keeper Massoud Dob after 42 minutes kept the visitors in the game after Jerry Lim struck from the left with a real cannonball. The teams went for the halftime break at 2 - 0. Payoh had most of the ball, with 61 percent of possession.

The bench was restless, and with 46 minutes passed Grilled's coach gave Gilbert Webb the opportunity the player had been hoping for. Hoàng Trung Quá reluctantly left the field. Oleg Usik increased the lead for Payoh to 3 - 0, getting a head onto a hooked ball from the right. The ball looked to have taken a deflection on the way in, but he's claiming it! Vikram Mudaliar nearly reduced the lead 60 minutes into the game, but a splendid one-handed save by Gheorghe-Daniel Stanoiev prevented the attempt coming in from the right flank from hitting the back of the net. Tan Tong Leong had a fantastic opportunity to put Payoh up another goal 76 minutes into the match after a pass through the middle set him free, but he fired just over the crossbar. With 83 minutes played, Jerry Lim could have brought this one home for Payoh as he charged up on the left, but his hooked ball went just a bit too high. 悠太 (Yuta) 中北 (Nakakita) hit the corner kick straight to the keeper, but it was mishandled, giving Grilled's Bilal Mohammad Harun an easy chance to knock it in for 3 - 1. A slight injury to his left calf muscle meant Dick McCandless had to leave the match early. It happened after 86 minutes. Antonio Santolalla tried to hide a smile as he entered the field. He had not expected to get a chance this day. Payoh's Joonas Riihiniemi swung in a good chance from the left, but the visitors' defence were able to clear the ball. With 89 minutes played, the Grilled coach decided a substitution may help turn the game around. José Luiz Velho came on, Chu Xin Lee had to leave the fray. As the match nears its end, the referee has deemed it appropriate to add 1 minute as stoppage time. The match ends 3 - 1. Payoh claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 62 percent.

Most important Payoh player was Jerry Lim. Antonio Santolalla was a disappointment, however. Kalki Parvathaneni performed admirably for Grilled. On the other hand, José Luiz Velho's play was disheartening.
