Let Them Eat Bread
Cakes Out Of Supply

Grilled advanced to the knockout stages of the Golden Trophy with a double-digit shellacking of Yorkshire's Cakes of Bread, the sixth division strivers being a very-recently founded affiliate of regional mainstays Wincobank Ironopolis. Only a month into being, it was not out of the ordinary that they would finish at the bottom of the group, with the main remining question whether they could find a goal in the tourney.
The answer, as it happened, would be a no, as they wouldn't manage even a single shot on target throughout a very long ninety minutes. Gaffer Walt Fitter had not had much time to figure out the best positions of the squad he had raised from neighbourhood hopefuls, so it seemed, and while there were some decent talents such as Lionel Plowman and Adam Wessman, there was no mistaking that this was very much a work in progress. Their 3-5-2 would be compressed into their own half soon enough, and Wu Jinglong once again sounded the horn with an assist for Kalle ter Berg after six minutes.

The former Chinese youth international has certainly lived up to all expectations thus far, and the other Birds players for their part had no qualms in using him as their main attacking outlet on the right wing. Wu would have a major part in Grilled's next two goals too, as he terrorized a still-recuperating Stephen Beavis. Bernie Egan would first be put onside for the second, before a savvy drop-off to Moey Xin Seng, not long after Moey had climbed highest to head a corner marginally over.

There would be three more for Grilled before half-time, with Mateja Jeftić first beating a by-now-resigned Matty Leask from the penalty spot, following handball in the box. Kalki Parvathaneni would dribble through for 5-0 next, leading into Wu Jinglong doing much the same, as he once more chose the right move at the right moment. The Birds weren't holding too much back here, with competition for spots in their upcoming title defence being fierce, and Kalle ter Berg would demonstrate plenty of fire in his takedown of Ethan Morgan, that would bring him a yellow card.

The second half brought another penalty ten minutes in, with the Cakes backline sent into chaos on Chu Xin Lee's sudden dash inside, although the actual foul appeared rather soft. No problems for Jeftić though, as he picked the same side. Leask would finally get a bit of a relief as he made a big save off Bhavya Panigrahi in the 61st minute, to great acclaim from his defenders.

Kalki Parvathaneni's booking for rough play would presage Panigrahi's exit in the 70th minute, to allow Gilbert Webb to be slowly bedded back in, after his injury. The limelight, however, would belong to Wu today, as he threw poor Beavis off straight from the restart, to finish off a searching pass spun in by Chu Xin Lee. Stewart Norman would become the third name in the referee's book, for his unsuccessful attempt in stopping Chu there.

Two more goals would top off the match, as Moey and Egan added to their tallies; the wonder was that none of the Grilled players would complete a hat-trick here, though Wu certainly was looking like it, before he got subbed off for Heng Dong Chu.
