Twenty-two From Four
If it wasn't perfect, it was at least exciting, as Grilled found the net for an average of over five goals a match, in their opening Supporter Week Trophy battery. Certainly, the Birds are under no illusions of trying to make the final knockout stages, as they once have, but the pressure being off only made the football all the more fun.
Chief among the fulfilled Grilled players were strikers
Rinor Isufi and
Gennady Dvorak, who picked up seven and six respectively, with Isufi additionally gaining the distinction of scoring in all four fixtures. Relatively easy big wins over mid-division Danish clubs SV Timão and The Flying Cobras brought the Birds another opponent from the Irish Premier, and Irish Cup finalists Kymers were simply too good, cruising to a 6-2 win after Rinor and Gennady had both given their team the lead.
While skipper Patrick Lehan played out of his skin for Kymers, bagging two goals with his classic all-action style,
Ang Leong Kum felt that former Japanese youth international fullback Yosuke Kudo was the biggest mismatch. "We never figured out what to do against him."
The Birds would end the day on a winning note against another Scandinavian challenger, with Norwegian Division Four club FC Bolteløkka falling 8-3. There were hat-tricks for both of Grilled's main strikers in that one, but Bolteløkka did give a good account of themselves after going a full six goals down, actually clawing three back with Peruvian forward Arturo Lostaunau leading.
Farmer Bunnies split their games, all of which were comparatively low-scoring. Their losses came at the beginning and the end, starting with a 1-2 against German Division Four side Die Primaten, and concluding with the same scoreline versus Chile's Los Imbatibles FC.
They would not concede in either of their victories, with
Enzo Paolo Panzarino and
Kwek Yun Jie striking early when Peruvian Division Five club Club Sport Gusto came visiting. Swedish Division Four side Medora Boys made for a far trickier affair, with their heavy possession advantage, but
Aswad Mohd Jafni profited from a lucky break inside the enemy box, in first-half time added on.
