Grilled 5 - 3 newbies
A brilliantly sunny day had enticed a crowd of 50789 to
The Cooking Pot.
Joppe 'Het Beest' Cabeke was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Alex Sadile and
Lars-Gustav Nordqvist. For some players the sunny weather was bad news. It made Powerful and Quick players a bit sluggish. For Technical players, it was instead an advantage, allowing them to shine on the pitch. The derby had been the talk of Jurong all week and fans of both teams could be seen throughout the stadium. The following players had been chosen by Grilled:
Germanakos -
Kang Leong,
其材 (Qicai) -
Reddy,
Teck Fu,
Keng Chuan,
Kwang Tse,
Thach -
Khairul,
Chitre,
An Keng.
newbies's starters:
Ferreira -
Gibson,
Eutiner,
Gardner -
Ping Keong,
Choon An,
Chu Chao,
Meng Heng,
Keng Jia -
Kim Tse,
Syarif.
Grilled Birds fielded a 2-5-3 lineup. For newbies are newbies, the formation of choice was 3-5-2. Grilled mostly ignored the flanks in favour of their ability to attack in the middle, taking advantage of their divine (+8) (28) level with that tactic. It was obvious that team Grilled had instructions to attack in the middle instead of on the wings. They were singing the praises of
Chad Thach 29 minutes into the match after his speculative chip from the middle of the penalty box found its way over the visitors' keeper to make the score 1 - 0 to Grilled. The visitors refused to give in and, after 31 minutes,
Chen Meng Heng evened things up as he finished off a perfect pass from the right. 1 - 1
Hong Kang Leong gave Grilled the lead with a beautiful free kick after 32 minutes. 2 - 1! With 38 minutes played, Grilled's
Aw Keng Chuan almost extended the lead, but his shot from the left glanced off the top of the bar to fall behind the net. newbies's
Tan Chu Chao was shown a yellow card after 40 minutes for slicing down an opponent.
Central attacks were the recipe of the day for Grilled, as they moved the ball from the wings to the middle with startling regularity. Grilled solidified their lead at the 41 minute mark, as
Lim An Keng dribbled the ball through the opposing central defence and scored to make it 3 - 1.
Chad Thach could have increased the lead after 42 minutes, but his shot hit the post after a nice combination in the middle of the park.
Chad Thach managed to make an excellent pass from the wing, but
Chia Kwang Tse was not as skillful and couldn't finish it off. newbies were desperate to get a goal back and pushed forward through the middle 44 minutes into the game. After a scramble in the box, the ball dropped to
Li Choon An, who smashed it home to make the score 3 - 2. It was 3 - 2 at the break. Neither team was controlling the possession at this point in the match, with the stats showing a 50:50 split.
Cheers filled the stadium as
Hwang Teck Fu broke through the visitors' central defence to put away the ball to increase the lead to 4 - 2 to Grilled. Morale on the visitors' bench was greatly improved when their player
Li Choon An reduced the lead to make it 4 - 3 after 62 minutes, following a pass from the right. An equalising goal seemed certain after 77 minutes when
Li Choon An attacked down the left wing, but
Dimitris Germanakos just managed to make a save to keep the ball out of the net. With 79 minutes played, seemingly due to lack of experience,
夏 (Ha) 其材 (Qicai) needlessly tripped an opponent just outside the penalty area, but the free kick that followed didn't succeed. 80 minutes into the game, Grilled wanted to bring some new energy to their game.
Chad Thach gave
Paulino Trindade a quick hug as he left the field. After 88 minutes, the Grilled coach wanted to see a new face on the pitch, waving
Hong Kang Leong off the field.
Damian Hutter took his place. With
Hong Kang Leong no longer on the pitch,
Aw Keng Chuan became the new set pieces taker. 88 minutes into the match, the referee signalled for a Grilled substitution.
Chan Ze Han came on for
Gandhik Chitre. The referee announced 2 minutes of stoppage time, giving fans a slim hope that their team could get one more attack in before this was all over.
Lim An Keng increased the lead for Grilled to 5 - 3, getting a head onto a hooked ball from the right. The ball looked to have taken a deflection on the way in, but he's claiming it! newbies's
Li Choon An hurt his back 89 minutes into the match, and had to be convinced by the medical team that it was safer not to continue the match. This gave
Lam Kang Su a chance to take to the field instead. With 89 minutes played,
Brian 'Was Born' Reddy of Grilled fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee was unimpressed, and booked him for diving. The match ends 5 - 3. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Grilled, with 51 percent of the ball.
Mohd Marzuki Khairul performed admirably for Grilled. However,
Dimitris Germanakos made a disastrous appearance. The most dominating newbies player was without a doubt
Estêvão Ferreira.
Ang Keng Jia on the other hand, had a terrible day.
