The big brother of his Chicken Wings age group, Hwang worked his way from rejection and obscurity, into the senior squad largely on grit alone. Observers would note that he was not beyond a fair bit of slyness in dealing with opponents - which the Birds fans have admittedly never been too hooked up on.

Often considered as on the fringes of a Grilled generation headlined by the likes of Chad Thach, Lim An Keng, Chia Kwang Tse and Mohd Marzuki Khairul, Hwang would eventually work his way to a comparable footing, as he won Golden Boots in Division Two and a Challenger Cup after reinventing himself as a target man.
