Tower Implosion
Chitre Comes Of Age

Grilled Birds' rescue of their season continued with an expected three points from troubled fc.tower, though the Clementi neighbours did make it dicey at various points. The attendance at The Cooking Pot remained dismal - a shade over thirty-two thousand - despite the splendid weather, though, and it looks like the Birds have much to do to regain the trust of their supporters.
Having finally arrested their slide against Mayuyu AKB48 last week, Grilled were eager to build on that win, and made few changes - with Paulino Trindade starting at left wing in place of Bilal being the main one. For the visitors, young player-coach Teo Kian Ping insisted that there was no plan to dispose of their Maltese forward trinity of Martin Lucas, Alex D'Amato and Bernard Cascun, the first of whom is continuing to add to his 29 national caps at youth level. As for Teo himself, he would go up against Trindade personally.

If fc.tower had outsized quality in attack, however, goalkeeper was a clear and present weakness, with Jeremiah Vuong continually appearing out of his depth. There would be no change in that assessment for the day, with the Birds told to test him at every opportunity. Chad Thach would have Vuong to thank for his first competitive goal, as he thumped it roughly in the direction of goal after an awkward first touch on Webb's long pass - and watched, delighted, as the goalie made a hash of it too.

That came after eleven minutes, and five more minutes on, it would be Chan Ze Han to make it two, and it was all but inevitable after Chan cut inside Khaw Long Keng. Aw Keng Chuan tried to follow up with a fierce strike in the 21st, which however only led to Teo leading a counterattack on the right, and finishing it off himself after playing it crisply off D'Amato. Aw would try too hard to make up for it, and his quite blatant seeking of contact in the box would be punished by German official Gerald Hesel, with a booking.

fc.tower would hold till half-time remaining just one goal down, which had to leave the home fans feeling dissatisfied. Chia Kwang Tse and Moey Xin Seng's arrival for the second period did give the Birds a bit of a kick up the backside, but some bustle from long-suffering sweeper Faik Selçuker had the visitors stay safe in defence. Gandhik Chitre would have a few fair looks, including a chance from ten yards in the 55th minute that he dug marginally too high, to his own animated disgust.

The slim lead was getting too much for Tian Yonghang to endure too, and he would expend his last substitution early, with Bilal Mohammad Harun replacing Gilbert Webb sixty-five minutes in, to try and compress play further. That would coincide with the stoppage for a free-kick thanks to Moey getting fouled by Seah How Wei several metres outside the penalty area, and Bhavya Panigrahi ended up dropping it over the wall - which was enough for 3-1.

Grilled's delight wouldn't last for very long, unfortunately, as they were hauled back by fc.tower soon enough. It wouldn't be one of their own players, interestingly, although Enrique Baena could hardly be faulted for getting in the way of Martin Lucas' stiff jab from the left. The shot was certainly on target, with the only question being whether Dimitris Germanakos had his near post properly covered; but with Baena "clearing" it into his own top corner, that matter was moot.

The Spanish winger looked absolutely crestfallen at his latest boo-boo, and had to be consoled by several of his teammates, before picking himself up off the ground. In any case, the Birds were at least still in front, although this meant that fc.tower returned to being a single accident away from a draw. And, with their forward line looking more active than before, this was certainly a distinct possibility.

Grilled would remember where their own strengths lay at this critical juncture, and made to direct the ball as far away from their own goal as possible. Veteran fullback Poh Su Ming came under heavy pressure from a Baena seeking redemption in the 78th minute, and his hasty turn would lose it to Gandhik Chitre in a dangerous position. The seventeen year-old forward appeared to have his shot on, but elected to fake it into an outrageous dribble past a stranded Vuong, for 4-2.

That audacious move lifted the home fans like nothing before, all the more as it was also Chitre's maiden league goal. The Number Nineteen was hardly done, however, and he would add another a mere four minutes later, with Trindade stabbing a short pass to him this time. Selçuker had stepped up a fraction too late for once, and all Chitre had to do was to send it to one of the posts, which he did.
