Living It Down
Czech Lynching

English Merseyside V.49 side Czech Liverpool, brother club of Czechslovakian club Czech Tasmania, spanked the Birds 4-1 in the Islanders Grand Tour today. It seemed Grilled's to lose after a furious start that had them take the lead just over ten minutes in, but the continued pressure would be contained - and turned back on them - by Liverpool. An unusually vicious tackle would mar the second half, but there could be little doubt that the English challengers deserved their win.
Liverpool had shuttered Fortuna Donabate without too much fuss last week, with defender Bruno Lynch supplying the goals, and they would go for a similar tack for this match. Latvian head coach Rolands Zālītis did however switch from a 5-3-2 to a 4-5-1 in an effort to be more competitive in the middle, which had the scoring burden fall on homegrown striker Johnny Hanlon. Moey Xin Seng would make a return to the starting lineup for Grilled, with Gandhik Chitre moved wide to left attack.

This setup did work work for the Birds for awhile, as while the likes of Moey, Kalki and Bilal were nowhere near their prime, their mutual understanding was enough to cause the bedding-in Liverpool players plenty of problems. Shaun Brewster was definitely not expecting Bilal's no-look flick on for Moey in the eleventh minute, and while Moey couldn't do much about it himself, he did lay it on for Chan Ze Han, who caught Alton Tither out with a beautiful lob.

That goal was no less than Chan deserved, after having been undone by a confluence of poor supply, tag-team marking and sheer bad luck in his recent games. Alas, that was about the best that Grilled could come up with, as Liverpool settled in. Jamshed Gulraiz would equalize off the left post on Rob Stevens' corner kick knockdown ten minutes on, and Chan's attempted response saw him taken down, ball and all, by Tither. The referee appeared to be considering it before waving play on, and had to hustle to make up ground as Brewster forced Germanakos into a big save on the counterattack.

This sequence was hardly complete, as Gilbert Webb swung play back the other way with a steely-nerved dribble and distribution out to Enrique Baena on the right, and the Spanish winger would see his intended assist for Kalki Parvathaneni blocked with difficulty by Tither, before his own finish came off the crossbar. The exchange would finally end in Liverpool's favour, as they raced back down that now-empty flank, with Stevens getting it in at the near post for 2-1.

Kalki had been one of Grilled's more-productive players in the first half, but it was evident that his legs were no longer there, which had Lim An Keng take over. That cost the Birds some of their previous compatibility, with the youngster clearly - if unimpeachably - off the wavelength set by the veterans. Despite that, the Birds maintained near two-thirds of the possession... which came to naught when young playmaker Jamshed Gulraiz pulled off an impossible-looking mid-air kick in the 57th minute. Germanakos was as taken aback as anyone, and barely moved even when it had found the back of his net.

The game had at least been largely good-tempered up till now, but that would soon change, as Lynch hacked Chan Ze Han down brutally in the 65th minute, before the ball had even gotten to the latter. Lynch had been Liverpool's hero against Donabate, but had precious little opportunity to roam today thanks to Chan mainly, and the tension would eventually boil over. There could be no other verdict than an immediate sending-off for that, but Bhavya Panigrahi's free-kick would sail tamely over everyone in the box.

For all their time on the ball, the Birds really didn't look like scoring all the more as the match went on, even taking their extra man into consideration. Instead, Tom Osman would add another for Liverpool as Grilled's defence pushed too eagerly upfield, and Moey's departure for Teo Chuan Yong with fifteen minutes left did nothing to improve Grilled's prospects.
