Pancho Punchout
A difficult opening day to the latest Trophy of Legends tourney saw the Birds pick up but a single win, as they started their day out to a 4-5 defeat at Swedish IV.160 side Brohult FC. It actually started very brightly with
Federico Parada opening from a majestic dash inside, and even after
Aw Keng Chuan got himself sent off for a silly off-the-ball altercation,
Damian Hutter quickly put it up to 2-0. Brohult then milked their personnel advantage to the max with five straight goals, before
Joe Reece and
Enrique Baena brought some late mischief.
A 6-1 thrashing of Swiss sixth divisioners bluenote brought some relief, with Pierre-Alexis Arnaud being the only one in their signature blue-and-white quarters to score, this from a wonderpass by Alberto Lips in the eleventh minute. The Birds were then on the receiving end against reigning Copa Esmeralda Maya champions San Pancho of the Mexican II.1, who had Cape Verde forward Aniceto Fuzeta grab a brace in a 5-1 rout.
Phua Ming Xin did pull one back with nine minutes to go, but it felt like San Pancho had let them have that one.
Farmer Bunnies would deal in more modest scorelines, and the began with a credible 2-1 win over Argentinean V.229 winners Atlético Montenegro, who were on ten consecutive competitive victories. Polish striker Wojciech Waloszczyk was remarkably active in the first half, but would only get a single goal from numerous attempts on target. The Buns had to wait till the second half for
Ho Ah Kian to head a corner home, before
Vitaliy Efendiev won it on a late counter with some calm thinking.
Italian Division Six outfit ASD Real Cammarota then shut the Buns out with both teams out of ideas, and veteran defender Virginio Tunesi won it in the 76th minute on their only attack of note. Istanbul's FC Luton Town 1885 were then dispatched 0-2, with the Turkish V.26 side trying to outwait Farmer Bunnies, only to be stumped by second-half strikes from Efendiev and then
Amirul Jufri Khairil.
Grilled International collected six points too, first getting their tournament off to a winning start against Spanish V.216 challengers Colono CF, who thought they had saved a point through Alejandro Gibert's brilliant drive in the 87th minute, immediately following
Shantinath Singh's miss. They didn't count on International star
Chua Jun Long not giving up, however, and Chua would take it himself past two in the last minute of regular time, before slinging a worldie in off the crossbar.
There would be no such heroics in the next game as they were completely overwhelmed by Brazilian Division Four side Celestial Futebol Club Eterno!, who had Kjell-Olof Selér and Barzin Hosseini Safa record hat-tricks in a 9-1 embarassment, allowing
Egidius van der Duin a consolation. That was at least merely three points lost, and Egidius would lead the charge in a 4-1 response against Worcestershire club Redditch Town FC of the English fifth division, in their third and last fixture of the day.
