Queer Quashed
Confidence Booster
The return of the Singapore Cup was eagerly awaited by Grilled's desperate reserve side, as it brought with it the anticipation of sweet victory. Four youngsters got berths on the wings, which combined with a solid core was enough to whip a semi-professional Queers side.
Vice-captain
Quah Han Kok set the stage in just the fourth minute, and demonstrated that being 33 was no obstacle to being effective as he shimmied his way between two defenders. While he may have lost a yard of pace, he more than made up for it with intelligent dribbling and a clear head as he faultlessly deposited the ball past a game Yeoh Kwang Woon in the opposition goal.
With the ice broken, it was time for the young ones to make their mark. Penati may have been a lesser attraction to scouts than the unknown quantities of Chuancheng and Jianyong, but there was no doubting his verve on the right side, where Lee Chen Yang, one of the better footballers in the Queers side, was unable to do anything to him. Two decent crosses brought two assists for the winger, both off Rotteveel's deadly head.
Darong and Subri got themselves booked for overenthusiastic heckling, but the coach wasn't going to try and moderate their mood. Han Kok then punched his way through on the left side to force a fourth goal, before Rotteveel was denied a first-half hat-trick when his brilliant free-kick was met by a no less brilliant save from a gutsy Yeoh, an actuary by profession.
Grilled's wingers kept the supply flowing as they relished the freedom Queers gave them, and Chuancheng made sure that Penati wouldn't hog all the plaudits. A budding partnership with Jianyong saw him get full rein of his flank, and Rotteveel eventually got a leg to one of his passes as it bounced about in the box. Queers did try to get forward once or twice, and were inevitably caught out by Subri who punished the high line with a dash down the middle.
Árva and Subri then put the tiring Queers to the sword, and then Rotteveel made it four for himself with an unstoppable volley from deep that Yeoh didn't try too hard to stop, lest he dislocate his shoulder. Darong then notched the tenth courtesy of a Han Kok through ball, before Jianyong ruffled some feathers by bringing down Chung Ming in a misguided attempt to score in injury time.
