Wesel's Upset

It was back to tournament duty for Grilled Birds - on which they would trip up by the end of the day. But first, it was the usual flying start against Spanish fifth division side Hordikeria, as the undoubted steel of Turkish midfielder Gürkan Sezay was not enough to slow the Birds' relentless advances. Mateja Jeftić had two from dead balls after Moey and Chan's strikes within the first ten minutes forced Hordikeria into an early substitution, and Massimo Angeli's exciting counter would be their only goal in a 1-6 defeat.

The wine-red shirts of Swedish IV.129 club Harvers United were next to face the Birds, and they were too blown aside 5-0, with Moey, Chan and Heng Dong Chu continuing to find the goals. Moey would be the only one to keep the streak up against German Division Three winners TSV Sace, who matched Grilled for possession. Dietrich Dafler answered Kalki Parvathaneni's late poach, but Magnus Leihe wasted a golden opportunity to equalize, though Chan too missed on the resulting breakaway as it ended 3-2.

Another German representative in Division Five's KFC Wesel were up next, and Grilled Birds should really have had no trouble at all in theory, with odds for the underdogs going as high as over ten-to-one on online betting sites. What followed would be an exceptionally productive day for the Wesel forwards, as they took the lead thrice, only to be hauled back each time, as the Birds more or less owned the game otherwise. A late winner dangled tantalizingly close for Grilled, but it would be Hubert Weissenberg with the twist at the end, as KFC Wesel pulled off a very unlikely 4-3 victory.

Chan Ze Han could only shake his head at how he and his teammates had not managed to put this one away. "On another day, it would have been a clear win by maybe four, five goals." the Grilled star claimed. "Each time we were getting into some real rhythm, they scored and went on the defensive. But fair play to Wesel, they fought hard for this."

That has Grilled Birds 2197th of over twenty-five thousand participants after four rounds, and if history is any gauge, they will have to win essentially all of their remaining games, to have a short at the knockout rounds. "That's not too far out there, actually." Chan continued. "Assuming no more flukes."

Farmer Bunnies split their games, as they crashed 0-5 to Dutch sixth division sude Bono Juniors. Bono might have been relegated at the end of last season, but their compact game was far more cohesive than the Buns, who could frankly have little to whine about as they got entirely dismantled in midfield. Rashid Nasir al Din did his chances of becoming Vivian Grubenmann's long-term successor no favours with his entirely-unconvincing goaltending.

The Buns would bounce back against Italian Division Six side Nerds United, with Richard Agyei indulging in his growing taste for goals, in a gritty 2-1 win. A 2-0 against Cyprus III.7 club PAOK F.C. followed, with Lim Su Liang opening, and Ibrahim Zahran Al-Maashany getting on the end of an Agyei assist, in a late barrage of long passes.

They would then lose 1-2 to H.I. Division Five hopefuls InterCAN, who like Bono Juniors outdid Bunnies at their own game. There would be a one-nil win in the V For Victory Cup thanks to yet another Vishnu Tallapaka free-kick winner right before half-time, but even the most ardent of Buns supporters would have to recognize a squad in terminal decline.

Indeed, the Buns would be outdone by International in terms of their tourney record, as International kicked off with an encouraging 4-1 win against Curacao II.2 side - and former Consolation Cup winners - Grote Knip Boys. Ukrainian veteran Illya Krayilo provided most of the Boys' attacking drive, and ended with a consolation goal and a yellow card.

A loss by the same margin to Spanish Division Four favourites Rotor Volgogrado followed, as Luca Rasmussen and Rasool Turki scored braces against Tommy Dongelmans' 84th minute lob. There was then a huge comeback from three down to defeat three-time Hong Kong Challenger Cup winners BFF]FORCO Nani Knicks by five goals to three, mostly thanks to Fausto Perono. Colombian V.154 side Club Deportivo Mirandela were then hammered 7-1 by an International team riding their momentum, as Chua Jun Long made the most of his late appearance, to round off the scoring.
