Granite City became the first Scottish club to take Grilled on at The Cooking Pot, and shortly thereafter became the first Scottish club to beat the Birds away as they prevailed through a late strike by fullback Kieran Blue.

Grilled started the recently-signed Anders Josefsson in central midfield and invested him with the captaincy for the match, a burden that Tian Yonghang, who started again, was more than relieved to be rid of. Feng Darong returned from a long layoff, and provided width down the right.

Granite City were more than solid in their yellow and black stripes, though, and midfield pair Avni Abuksis and Andre Plößneck were a level above anything Grilled had to offer. They concentrated on feeding passes to local lad Paul Elphee, who had distinguished himself with the Wee Dons. An inventive backheel by Plößneck rolled it to Elphee in the 15th minute, but Silvera made himself big and Grilled lived through that.

It was all for naught as Chan Woon Jin made a blatantly obvious turn in the nineteenth minute, and got himself robbed by Elphee in the middle of his move. Centerback Lim Chuan Heng had the rampaging Stephen Turpie to worry about, which left Elphee with the time and space needed to lure Silvera out and stick it into the net.

The Birds replaced the ineffective Lihai with Simões in the second half, with a similarly unimpressive Safrinho making way for Sunday's goalscorer Martin Torsson a bit later. This revitalised what had been a static attack, but Granite City continued to dominate, with Avni Abuksis crashing a grounder off the foot of the post in the 59th minute.

This was followed by a brilliant reaction save from Silvera off Andy Gatheral's stooping header, and Grilled thought they might have scrapped a draw when Simões used his strength to barge through the Granite City defence, barely legally at that, and plant one past Polish custodian Konrad Boratyński with the outside of his boot.

It wasn't to be, however, as another academy promotee did it for the visitors. Woon Jin was again the culprit as he failed to keep up with Turpie's surprising turn of pace, and Silvera couldn't reach the tall Blue in time to prevent him from heading the winner.
