A late bloomer, Chan was kept on as a willing reserve by the senior team, as he continued schooling part-time on the side. Chan, who once held the Chicken Wings' all-time top scorer record with 18 goals, did not find the transition to the pro ranks easy.

Frozen out of the side for a whole season, the central midfielder finally got his professional debut when he was pressed into service against Chemistry as a fullback, after defensive substitute Han Lik-Tsun was himself injured. Some bit-part appearances followed before he finally bit the bullet and moved to Bosnia for his career after six long seasons.
