Portuguese sixth divisioners BotelhasFC made for a stiff test for Grilled Birds' visiting squad, many of whom were first-teamers, and led 3-1 at one point. The Birds would pull themselves together late in the match, fortunately, as reserve midfielder Toma Tamiya affirmed his utility through two excellent goals.
Toma would start at left wing today, with Paulino Trindade trying out the right, as Mohsen El Khateeb took over in central defence to give Ha Qicai an off day. The hosts would feature a fairly strong team in a defensive 5-4-1 formation, with 18 year-olds Fernando Hierro and Cláudio Figueiredo looking slightly out of place, in the sweeper and right wing spots respectively. Finnish senior striker Ville Vickholm would lead them in attack.

Much of the early going would see Grilled dictating play thanks to their possessional advantage, even if it took them the better part of twenty minutes to create their first strike against Pedro Jorge Vieira in the BotelhasFC goal. 1-0 arrived not long after that, as Hwang Teck Fu picked up the ball several yards outside the penalty area, navigated some seriously crowded areas, and lobbed Vieira with the goalie partially blindsided by his own defenders.

Paulino Trindade would then cook up a resounding right-footed volley on the Birds' next move forward, which came right back off the crossbar and left Mohd Marzuki Khairul scrambling for it to no avail. The action ramped up with a near-fatal defensive mistake by Daniel Junyent several minutes later that luckily eluded Chia Kwang Tse too, and with 31 minutes gone, Chad Thach's swirling effort was stopped on the line by Humberto Coelho. From the ensuing counterattack, fullback Gonçalo Laroca pulled his shot across Dimitris Germanakos' goalmouth... but Roberto Rego Pereira was running in from the other flank, and finished it off.

BotelhasFC were a completely changed team for some minutes following that goal, as they sliced into Grilled with an intensity that they had seldom experienced this season. Trindade was not prepared for Junyent's sheer determination to advance down the touchline in the 37th minute, and this allowed the Spanish winger to break into the Birds' box. Yaroslav Tsepulin called for it, and placed the shot just out of Germanakos's range.

There would be a penalty for the Birds two minutes later, and Toma Tamiya would earn opprobrium from Tian Yonghang, for his cheeky panenka attempt that was easily cradled by a bemused Vieira. This would have been more appropriate had the Birds actually been far ahead, it seemed, and this only got worse as the hosts extended their lead to 3-1 in the 51st minute through a Ville Vickholm counter, after Gandhik Chitre got denied by the woodwork after extended passing around BotelhasFC's box.

Grilled's only comfort was that they still held most of the ball, and with enough attempts, one was bound to go in. Chia Kwang Tse demonstrated the truth to this theory with his inelegant but certainly effective rush in the 59th minute, that had English referee Anthony Robinson hesitating after Fernando Hierro's clumsy contact. Chia kept his feet and put it in, to save him from having to make the call.

Toma Tamiya's redemption arc arrived ten minutes later, as Lim An Keng won the Birds a free-kick just a foot outside the penalty area, from a tussle with Belgian playmaker Simon Hellebuyck. Toma sized it up for some seconds before taking a short run-up, and lifting it over the wall and in at the left post. Two minutes later, he then hit the winning goal, after sliding in strongly to claim Vieira's block off a Chia Kwang Tse special.
