Equally Vaxxed
Glowing from their promotion, the first day of Grilled Birds' Trophy of Legends campaign had them rack up two comfortable wins before a riveting draw. Polish VI.748 hopefuls KS Lechia Gdańsk were up first with a sensible counterattacking 5-2-3, but this succumbed to the Birds' decisive pressure, with
Evandro La Face and
Orest Tokarz getting a brace each, in a 5-2 victory.
Gústav Thoroddsen also scored with a glancing header in the 33rd minute, but his newfound indiscipline again rose to the fore with a needless booking four minutes before half time - later replicated by substitute La Face.
The yellow shirts of German VI.912 champions Eintr. Braunschweig fared even worse, even as they came off ten competitive games undefeated;
Orest Tokarz and
Federico Parada got the Birds off to two by the 26th minute time, which Braunschweig clawed back to 2-3 with David Carusone's cleanup from a corner, 50 minutes in.
Brian Reddy's flash of inspiration permanently tipped it his team's way, though, and he concluded the match with a wonderfully piquant lob over himself, for
Federico Parada to tap it in for 7-2, Grilled.
Romanian IV.53 competitors F.C Vaxus were next in their purple and gold, and they would be the Birds' dopplegangers. Engaging in a mirror 2-5-3, they got it back to three-all by half-time despite
Federico Parada and
Gústav Thoroddsen slamming Grilled into a two-goal lead again. Parada's penalty was then cancelled by Chinese forward Zhan Haimin in the 39th minute, as Vaxus thrived with the arrival of Gleb Kurchatov. It was Grilled's turn to play catch-up in the second half, and it would take Thoroddsen and Reece to save the point, as Mihai Carbarău gave his side a 6-4 advantage after 77 minutes.
"Now that's a value-for-money game."
Ha Qicai, who counted himself fortunate that his skinning by Birgir Linklett led to nothing, panted afterwards. "It was a complete workout!"
Farmer Bunnies kept the goal count down in the Heroes of 2014 Trophy, with just two from their three fixtures - and both in their opener against Russian IV.56 titleists Krasniy manyak. The Muscovites never regained their rhythm ater falling to
Lau Keng Kwang's excellently-struck goal from a seventh-minute counter, with
Ong Li Jing repeating the trick 65 minutes in against shaken Italian custodian Pier Nicola Mobi. Tatu Cavén got some blood pumping with a bustling dribble with twenty minutes to go, but he made a strange decision to shoot from afar, with far better options looming.
SEZNEC KORPS (French VI.1001) and juve815 (Polish VI.471) would then both finish nil-all, and not due to any lack of effort from the duo, who sought to attack into the Buns' 5-4-1. Their positivity was for naught, however, as the Buns bluntly stuck to their posts, and arguably came close to winning both contests on the break. juve815's Slovenian midfield general Dragomir Supe got sufficiently riled up by
Prakash Bhujbal's gamesmanship that he purposefully brought him down late in the game, for which he was immediately dismissed. Luckily, Bhujbal was no worse for wear.
Grilled International then sustained the only defeat of the day of the Grilled clubs, but won their other two. There would be a huge result against Colombian II.2 representatives, and recent Copa Cocuy Rubí winners, DEPORTIVO PASTO ASOCIACION, as they ran out 4-3 winners after a humdinger of a game. The pace never slowed after
Chua Jun Long slipped it past veteran Norwegian goalie Christian Matsen in the eighth minute, but Mikkel Schrøder seemed to have tied it up after some terrible marking, in the 83rd. Centreback Peleg Almagor's second yellow soon after was instrumental, however, and
Phua Li Kong feasted on
Mohsen Zeynali's pass from the left to decide it.
That took all too much out of International, and they would be drummed 1-4 by Swedish IIl club Åkervägens IF next, although there was probably no shame in that. The Swedes profited from some naive defending by 39 year-old
Sazwan bin Hj Muhd Salleh, which allowed Stefan Olsson to get in and score after just three minutes.
Chua Jun Long would then be hustled out of a bunch of decent openings, and despite
Mohsen Zeynali pulling one back from good reading of the flow 57 minutes in, Åkervägens IF would proceed to wrap it up, 4-1.
International duly turned that scoreline on their next opponents, Portuguese VI.281 team Aquile di Porto, who first led through some fancy aerial control from Graziano Manchìa in the 32rd.
Chua Jun Long and
Umut Koza would make Aquile pay for relaxing prematurely as half-time approached, though, and
Egidius van der Duin and
Mohsen Zeynali added theirs in the next half.
