After seven seasons without a local first-team striker, Cao Wai-Kin came to show that what foreigners can do, a Singaporean can do just as well. Wai-Kin was roundly criticized for waiting nine S-League games to find his first goal at the top level, against Winning Eleven.

The Swashbucklers veteran continued playing second fiddle to the proven Ola Martinsson, despite his official billing as Grilled's main man. Regardless of his poor conversion rate, Cao has found his calling as a support striker, a role in which he has won two Singapore Cups.
