Sad Seventeen
It was a repeat of the last season as Grilled finished with a paltry 17 points again, but this time the Birds actually started decently. Losing their final four matches proved the nail in their coffin, though, and Isle of Flames took revenge for their relegation last season by re-promoting at the expense of Grilled.
Not that they had much of a chance of matching up to Arrogancae, who made full use of their expensively-assembled squad to crush all opposition en route to defending their title. The only team to get any points of them were second-placed Rollin', who pulled off a wonderful win in the fifth week, but even Rollin' were left in the dust and ended 12 points behind.
Grilled were heading for a respectable finish with 13 points from their first seven matches, but suffered an inexplicable loss of form in the second half, gaining only four more points. None of the players performed particularly badly, but last season's standout Valdir Dias Paes was less than commanding in goal.
Some put it down to Grilled's focus on the Cup after it became clear that Arrogancae were running away with the title, and the seventh round elimination by Red Chaos took the wind out of their sails. In any case the rot became too deeply set in to dispel, and Grilled were finally out of the S-League after 13 seasons, though they did at least outlast all seven of their original leaguemates.
One good thing did come out of all this, which was vice-captain Quah Han Kok's call-up to the national team at the age of 31. The ex U-20 star represented Singapore in the World Cup against Austria, and once more against the Ukraine, even if he was not to taste victory on either occasion.
