Spent Force
The exertions of competing for two S-League titles in a row had utterly drained Grilled, perhaps as much due to their failure as the resources committed. Sandy Edmond would abruptly leave after a single promising season as his wages were too much to bear for the Grilled treasury, and Scottish enforcer John MacKinnon missing the first half of the season through injury didn't help.
Weakened in two key areas, Grilled hobbled admirably even as Rollin' Thunder punished them dreadfully on opening day. Rollin' were about as exhausted as their fiercest competitors of the previous seasons, though, and in the end a big-spending Arrogancae side would romp to the title with 14 points to spare.
In contrast, just seven points separated the bottom seven teams in one of the tightest S-League competitions to date, and Grilled barely avoided automatic relegation by a single point. Instrumental in their survival was winning a nine-goal thriller against fellow candidates for the drop, Isle of Flames, who went down instead.
The campaign was in all respects a letdown after the highs attained previously, and a sloppy fifth round Cup exit to shoot'n'save did not do much to garner excitement. Grilled were living on the edge money-wise, and the two youth recruits in Tao Tingfeng and Feng Darong were not the sort to set the world alight. Italian youngster Ciro Penati lived up to the hype, though, as his speed down the right flank vacated by Edmond, as well as his antics off it, won him much attention if not outright fandom.
Quah Han Kok saving the side with the only goal against Kim Tae Hee FC in the qualification match turned out to be perhaps Grilled's high point, which just went to show how far Grilled had fallen.
