TTT Trauma
The Birds got off to a difficult start on the first day of the Supporter Week Trophy, and none harder than against the reigning Suomen Joutsen-haastajacup holders, FC TTT United. Grilled were run absolutely ragged here with former Finnish U-20 midfielder Aapi Huhta commanding the centre, and when Markus Koskela was granted a possibly-unwarranted penalty in the 66th minute, it was for 7-0.
Grilled's best moment then was a stroke of genius by
Gandhik Chitre in the 37th that embarassed ex-Dutch national wingback Rastko Vujnović, and he would fare much better in the next game against Spanish seventh divisioners Cathedral Software, which saw him tap one home in the 79th minutes towards a six-nil sweep. It could have been more really, but the Birds took the pedal off the gas after
Kalki Parvathaneni and
Aw Keng Chuan came up with early goals, though
Bhavya Panigrahi proved consistent as ever from set-pieces, going two out of two.
Panigrahi would then open from open play against the yellow shirts of Canadian IV.9 side Hastings Sunrise FC, with
Chan Ze Han powering another in shortly afterwards, as Grilled raced to a 5-2 win. The hard times then returned against Italian Division Five representatives Ɓorgovilla, who were perhaps fortunate to find Chitre indifferent in front of goal; Silvano Vita and Jolyon Edelstein came good towards the end of the first half, which was enough for them to defend a 2-0 result.
Farmer Bunnies' matches were a lot tighter in comparison, and they started off brightly with a pair of victories, the first a 2-0 versus German H.A.L participants L.A. Cyberteam.
Vitaliy Efendiev's 61st minute header from a narrow angle provided a shaky lead, and
Mushtag Al-Nameeri would wait until literally the last minute to ride Thomas Werner Wilfert's aggressive last-ditch challenge, to make sure against young Belgian goalie Simon Van De Keer.
Another H.A.L club, this time Norway's Pissi Vildensky, ran the Buns even closer next, with only
Lau Keng Kwang's counter in the 64th minute separating the two teams. The Norwegians created plenty for Hungarian winder Alexander Szeiler, who would however be stymied by
Gilberto Sorondo on the day. The Buns' fortunes then reversed against German sixth divisioners Kickers Aschen, who came back after
Miran Raulj's first-half poach, winning 2-1 after surviving an electric injury-time attempt by the evergreen
Vishnu Tallapaka.
German V.51 club ST Leihgestern then outdid the Buns at their own game, with Jordanian Alam Turk El-Abbadi scoring on the overlap down the left, 22 minutes in. There was a lot of to-and-froing after that, including a missed penalty by Mohammad Ayan late, but the Buns never really threatened in any case. As a consolation, Farmer Bunnies will receive another cut from the transfer of a former academy player, with 24 year-old former Singapore U-20 striker Tommy Chong returning from Portugal's Eremitas F.C., to play for Division Three club Ambush F.C. in a S$7 million deal.
Grilled International would take their relegation in stride as they exerted themselves in their fixtures, with Zambian II.1 side The French Dispatch falling 2-5 to a
Chua Jun Long-inspired onslaught. Chua needed only three minutes to put it past Swedish Number One Felix Vinen for the first time, but the Dispatch would defend valiantly, and it would only be some seventy minutes later that
Safari bin Hj Jali slipped through again.
International then got on the wrong side of the action against Chilean III.8 outfit Cayondo FC, despite
Wang Hanxuan willing them to a 3-2 comeback lead in the 66th. That merely riled Cayondo up, and their unorthodox 3-4-3 then showed its raw bludgeoning power, as they bagged five without reply to run out 7-3 winners. International countered with a 7-2 of their own versus Belgian sixth divisioners FC De Kuitenbijters next, with
Zaini bin Hj Kaling finishing strongly, and 20 year-old forward Ricardo Villa providing the resistance from the opponents.
They then finished the day with a two-all draw shared with Polish V.216 side I znowu od Zera, twice coming from behind to frustrate the Poles. Suriname dazzler Fernando Goedhart went right, then left to lose
Arcadi Sansalvador and send it home in the 20th, but
Osertz Indurain equalized five minutes before the break, as
Querubim Santos Couto punched a free-kick onto the bar. Elvis Ljubej then scored on the counter in the 53rd, to which
Safari bin Hj Jali answered with a brilliant off-foot curler from the head of the box.
