Kabul To The Chin
Grilled Birds went three for four on the first day of their latest Trophy of Legends campaign, beginning with an 8-0 sweep of Dutch sixth division side FC Valderama that saw two
Bhavya Panigrahi dead ball goals to begin with against the opposition's less-than-effective press, and winger Dries van Broekhoven sent off late for continued malfeasance against
Shekar Kannan. Kannan then would keep up the good work against Portuguese Division Four club B.I.R. in the next match, as he scored the first two, later expanded into a hat-trick on a through ball strike in the 70th minute, in a 7-2 win.
The pattern of bagging a brace to start off with would then be continued by
Abd Hadi Taib Mazhud against two-time Irish Premier champions Top Dogs FC in the third match, whose former international Jonathan Rock would find little joy against Grilled's advantage in possession. Their French midfielder Nicolas Foucher would get two goals, but this only after
Chan Ze Han had enjoyed his own double, and
Kalki Parvathaneni would bust through five minutes from time, to make the final score 5-2.
Norwegian II.1 representatives Familien FC were up next, and the Birds would for once be outplayed in midfield, as Familien edged possession. More than that, however, would be the genius of Mongolian national star Chin Kabul. Generally a defender with the club, Kabul would start in midfield today, and his incredible versatility would see him with a hat-trick by the 28th minute, all from open play no less. Still,
Chu Xin Lee would have it at 3-3 by half-time, but late goals from Niklas Yliräisänen and Danny Lynch won it for the Norse.
There would be a rush amongst some of the Grilled players for Kabul's jersey after the match, that ended with
Vikram Mudaliar emerging with the prize. "It wasn't fun being on the other end of that display, but as a footballer, one can't help but appreciate it too." As it is, the loss has Grilled end the day in 541th of nearly 7000 teams, after having been as high up as 29th after the third round.
Hilal Bakhtiar would be notably absent for the games, explained by the head coach being involved in a number of transfer negotiations, perhaps most prominently that for 25 year-old former Wings academy player Png Kang Chun. The defensive midfielder would however eventually leave Germany's Sportfreunde Kasachstan for Polish VI.381 winners Los Devils, however, with the Birds unwilling to match the S$10.9 million fee paid.
There would be no victory for Farmer Bunnies in the Heroes of 2014 Trophy, as they were given a dose of reality following an otherwise cushy league season. It began with a 0-1 loss to Polish Division Five side KSSK Zawisza Bydgoszcz, then a nil-all draw with preeminent Cook Islands club FC Viktoria Arorangi 14 of the Oceanian IV.26, and then another 0-1 to Romanian fifth divisioners C.S. Alfa, with Javier Echalecu clipping it over
Gilberto Sorondo for the winner.
Vishnu Tallapaka would finally break the Buns' goal duck with his free-kick prowess against Italian VI.304 club CipreTeam, only for the Buns to again be behind by the 62nd. Strikes by
Lim Su Liang and
Vitaliy Efendiev would have them tasting a win, but Icelandic youngster Loftur Hilmarsson sadly had other ideas, and equalized four minutes from time right after getting booked for a late tackle on
Djoko Tambusai.
Grilled International would in contrast relicate the Birds' 3-1 record despite also having a tough league campaign, starting with a big 7-2 thrashing of Bulgarian V.126 champions Tervel AC, that had
Wang Hanxuan cut loose with a hat-trick. Defeat would however then follow against English IV.12 winners City Leicester FC, with their Polish skipper Bronisław Połom putting the final touches on a 4-2 result.
International would recover with exactly the same scoreline versus another Romanian Division Five club in Fc Gazele, with
Zaini bin Hj Kaling answering Cyril Glachant's opener, and
Hardi bin Besar took over with two more into
Li Xin Chi's fourth, before Ciprian Dulf reduced in the last minute for Gazele. It was then
Tibor Atzenhain and Xin Chi again to record braces against Italian seventh divisioners Barchetta, towards a 4-1 win.
Querubim Santos Couto might have had a clean sheet, but for Ádám Osgyán's consolation wondergoal.
