Helmi Heads Out
German sixth division side Kickers Rutesheim picked up 17 year-old defender Mohd Helmi bin Hj Jamrin from Grilled International today, on a free transfer. Rutesheim were awash in cash having recently divested themselves of Oswin Morteveille, Jaime Martínez Lapuente and Miloš Kocourek for big bucks, but Spanish head coach Luis Enrique Orbaneja wasn't eager to splurge after laying out some S$5 million for Mozambique veteran Gaspar Afonso Oliveira. This would be Mohd Helmi's lucky break, then, as he accepted their offer eagerly.
Mohd Helmi was remembered by assistant coach Hafiz bin Hj Lamat as the strong sort of centreback, but also with a deceptive knack for passing the ball accurately out of danger, once he got it. "He generally keeps his calm even in trying situations." Hafiz recounted. "It's quite rare to see in the younger guys, actually. Best of luck in his career."
