Never Too Late
It was Niranjan Muthu's last shot at a professional football career, and it took UAE Division Four start-up Dubaindians to save it, literally minutes before he was about to throw in the towel.
"I was walking to the office with my resignation in hand, when Mr. Mok burst out and yelled that I had an offer." the aspiring forward beamed. "It didn't matter where it was from by then, I would have jumped at it were the club in Outer Siberia!"
Dubaindians' spanking new home will be quite a bit better than Muthu had feared, and he credited mentor Mok Feng De for this second boost, the first coming after he had been cut from goldenJunior's trials. "A season after that, and I was scoring a hat-trick in Slovakia. I'd have gotten nowhere without his support!"
Another Wings alumni also saw the benefit of sticking around, as 18 year-old Liang Chee Tian's temporary contract had nearly run down, when he got a call from Tampines Phoenix F.C. out of the blue yesterday.
"It was a total shock." the centreback said. "There I was, wondering about my future, and then the Division Two champs are on the line. I thought it was a sick joke at first."
The Phoenixes may have hit a bad patch, having won just one of their ten league matches thus far, but Liang like Muthu isn't looking a gift horse in the mouth. "They said sign, I said, where?"
