Chen No Go
Marcus Liehner admitted that he had had his eyes on 29 year-old midfielder Chen Cheng Yew, who had done well for himself after being released by Grilled as a youth player a decade ago. Chen had distinguished himself sufficiently at lower league Swiss side Racing-Club Berna to earn a transfer to 1.FC Zwettla Spitzbuam of Austria, where he spent the majority of his career.
When word came that Chen was ready for a move, Liehner tried to persuade the club's board to part with a million or so to sign the player, but was flatly refused. "They said that there would be no buying without selling, in this precarious financial climate. Ironically, we spend about a million in wages each week anyway." Chen eventually went to C. A. Constantino Boggian of Argentina three days ago, for just under S$2 million.
The Grilled reserve squad was happy to have a break from their usual routine of defeats, as they were given the day off. "It feels great not to get thrashed, and I'm looking forward to being whacked next week."
Hang Bao-Tam joked.
