German defender with a mean right foot, Liehner spent most of his career with die Zwergen and four days with Swiss side Pilatus Dragons. Dragons played the role of middleman in recommending the 32 year-old to Grilled, and an interview with Alcántara convinced him that Liehner was the man to eventually succeed him.
Liehner eventually was to leave the club under acrimonious conditions, as Grilled floundered between the second and third divisions under his watch. The lack of direction angered Grilled's expectant fans, and he was unceremoniously forced out and replaced by local national defender Han Lik-Tsun.
Disappointed, Liehner returned to Germany and is rumoured to have quit football coaching, becoming an agent instead.
