20 year-old Birds winger Lee Huat Wei thought his dream of a professional career had passed, after nearly two years of on-and-off training with the reserves without interest from any suitors. He thus thought it a joke when a club official informed him that Spanish Division Seven side La Gandara had offered him a free transfer, only to nearly break down when he learnt that it was true.
"I mean, it was all just so sudden." Lee recalled. "It's not easy taking time out during National Service, and I was considering all options when this call came. Of course I will take it up!"
Wings scout Mok Feng De was proud of his charge's pure perseverance. "Almost all would have quit looking, but he just loves the game." Mok observed. "Actually, on skill and flair alone, he would have been an easy pick, had he been younger when he joined up. Well, it's never too late."
