Ghanem was always too big a talent to stay long at his hometown club L'Aigle Sportif de Somâa, and after winning a league title as a 19 year-old with Ipari Veszprém KSK in Hungary, he would win six caps while playing in Peru with the present-day FC Saint Pauli. Admittedly, it was a slog, with the only positive result being a 1-1 Africa Cup draw against Cameroon.

That did not detract from Ghanem's attraction to suitors at all, given his lanky frame fused with a natural sense for how to get in the way of attackers.
