The Green Are Back
Finally back in the S-League after a nineteen-season leave of absence, Grilled spared nothing in making it count, and served up their custom blend of reckless attacking in their thrilling 5-4 re-debut against Charis FC. A fine home win against singnet_utd notwithstanding, though, they would soon discover the very high standards at the top, and concluded the first half of the season with consecutive defeats to Penguins, eventual champions BCFC, and a shock surrender to QUT FC.
It then picked up from there, with newly-capped national forward Mohd Safri bin Mohd Kassim leading the vanguard. A narrow loss to United Warrior Team in the sixth round of the Cup proved a blessing in disguise in retrospect, as Grilled made short work of STMJ United in their introduction to the Emerald Challenger Cup. Three S-League opponents in Charis FC, Pearl Divers and the redoubtable Isle of Flames beckoned next in the secondary competition, but the Birds would pass all these tests with a flourish, to become the first local club to lift two Challenger Cups in a row, repeating their Singapore Cup feat.
Their record was rather more spotty in the league, and despite a much-celebrated away result against Be Champions FC, their performances were little better than mid-table level, and that was where they rightly finished. This would necessitate a risky qualification game against Kim Tae Hee FC to get another run, an occasion for which the squad thankfully regained their best form.
Farmer Bunnies on the other hand would probably want to forget their premature visit to the third division, as they managed just two wins, both coming against the embattled munchnomgroan. It has never looked better for them on the developmental front, however, as their Rabbits youth team supplied wonderful talent in the form of Tham Leng Teck and Kwek Yun Jie, which was further bolstered by the recruitment of equally-great potential in Aswad Mohd Jafni, Sofian Azfar and Brendan Leung. Not only that, the Rabbits appear to have struck gold with the discovery of exciting forwards in Yap Chuan Lee and Daniel Nguyen, as well as a possible one-in-a-generation wonderkid in Ong Kok Long.
