Falling Off The Edge
The unthinkable happened, as Grilled lost their tenuous grip on even Division Two football. Relegation was richly deserved as they managed just three victories out of fourteen league matches, suffering a streak of seven consecutive defeats that all but drained the life out of the club.
Despite Rotteveel more than doubling his goal tally from the previous season, netting 31 competitive goals up from fourteen, the rest of the side were found sorely wanting; the other players put together got just 33 goals, as half of the league got full points off the grounded Birds.
The only departure of note for the entire season was that of Dani Spirig, but some have mused if that was the straw that broke the camel's back. With Grilled's once-vaunted midfield now getting on in years, the loss of the Swiss, voted last season's best player, might have been too much to bear. An injury to Quah didn't help, but the sad fact was that Grilled too often simply got outclassed.
Not even the Cup could provide some consolation to what was a wholly terrible season, as the Birds went out at the sixth round. However, Rotteveel still managed the quite incredible achievement of snagging the top scorer award for the competition, bagging 19 goals to beat Ren Run Ming of eventual winners, Kampung Dreamer.
It was telling that winning two of their last four league games counted as a great run, but by then Grilled were well and truly doomed.
