Regaining Strength
Grilled were now back down to the third division for the first time in 22 long seasons, but it was at least heartening that they kept the bulk of their fanbase. While Grilled's notions of
grandeur were badly misplaced in Division Two, they showed that wounded as they were, they were still too good for the next level down. Two goals gave Grilled a much-needed victory over Footwork FC in the season opener, and the Birds soon led to the finish.
Eleven league matches without defeat, ten of them wins, was a welcome change from the less-than-stellar records that Grilled fans had gotten accustomed to, among them two morale-boosting 10-0 thrashings of troubled SHEV UNITED.
Other than the turnaround on the pitch, Grilled also had the breathing room to implement the back-to-youth policy that had carried the club through its golden years. Although a number of young hopefuls didn't make the cut, among them such highly-rated prospects as Tan Meng Guang and Mark Matthews, they brought some much-needed funds in. This was later spent on teenaged forwards Martin Torsson, Michele Salieri and Zheng Lihai, as the Birds look to grow a new generation of stars.
This need became ever more evident as it was obvious that Quah and company, despite bossing the pitch at this level, were becoming dangerously injury-prone. Quah himself was hurt twice, thankfully not seriously both times, while MacKinnon sat out the tail-end of the campaign. Luckily, the title was snugly in Grilled's grasp by then, as the club won promotion to II.4, making it a home run of all the four Division Two leagues.
