Joker 9 recorded their sixth win against Grilled Birds in fourteen meetings, and one which was probably as close as had ever occurred between the two clubs. This was a real ding-dong battle between a Birds XI still adapting to the loss of their forwards - but not that much the worse for it - and a Joker 9 side optimized towards a basic but solid 3-5-2, and it would be the Jokers who pushed through at the death, on their own ground.
Aljunied Bridge hosted slightly over 44,000 today, which remained a sizeable crowd considering the pouring rain. Turkish referee Necat Rosa was reportedly close to calling off the match, but a final inspection allowed it to go ahead. The stadium announcers would throw out an offhand remark after the introductions on how this was likely to end in a goalless draw given the conditions... and they could hardly have been more mistaken.

The last fixture between the sides had been a qualifier for the Birds' S-League spot nine years back, which saw them hammered 2-7 by Nitin Anchan and company. Both teams would have a complete turnover since then, though the Birds did retain Chan Ze Han and Bilal Mohammad Harun on their bench. The heavy pitch definitely did not prevent recent national youth forward Chan Jian Jian from moving fast when he wanted to, and he would blitz Aw Keng Chuan in the sixth minute - but couldn't get enough behind his eventual strike.

What the rain did affect was the players' ability to defend effectively, with dribbles unexpectedly becoming the main way that they moved the ball about, in the swirling wind. Galip Adıcan could legitimately point to a surprise gust as to why he allowed Mohd Marzuki Khairul's effort past him in the 16th minute, but the Jokers would benefit too ten minutes later, as a wayward free kick was blown to a pleasantly surprised Vikas Satishchandra. This randomness made great watching for the neutrals, even as the coaches stewed in their dugouts.

There was no calling a winner here, as the game swung to-and-fro; Adıcan somehow denied Ha Qicai from point blank as Grilled tried to answer Satishchandra's leveller immediately, and it was instead the 19 year-old who got another once soon enough, with Chia Kwang Tse unwilling to make contact. Grilled would then roar back as Lim An Keng and Ha Qicai scored within two minutes of each other towards the end of the half, only for Tay Fu Yew to bang in a brilliant effort from the right with two minutes left in the half, with the final skip across the wet grass befuddling Germanakos.

It was Grilled Birds who claimed the initiative after the rainstorm weakened significantly over the interval, and Brian Reddy was without doubt the man to watch, over the first twenty-five minutes of the second half. The almost-bad did come before the good, as the winger stuck out a foot with good intentions to block Hans-Ulrich Rehn's grounder in the 50th minute, only to divert it into his own goalpost. Germanakos was simply too relieved that it did not go in, to try and berate Reddy.

Reddy would go on to establish his worth as he began tormenting Rehn and Ariel Maceiras with his inimitable ball control on the move, which resulted in a superb would-be assist to Chia Kwang Tse in the 52nd minute, that Chia unfortunately couldn't take advantage of. Reddy was just getting started, however, and he was at his best in stealing it off Avelino Franco to restore Grilled's lead in the 58th, before getting just enough on Mohd Marzuki Khairul's excellent one-touch pass 69 minutes in, for 5-3!

The Birds fans were feeling pretty confident at this stage, but alas, their team's usual deficiencies were just waiting to emerge from underneath the surface. The drying turf turned out to benefit Joker 9's attacking game as much as it did Grilled's, and Vikas Satishchandra completed a deserved maiden hat-trick just two minutes after Reddy's second, exploding in from the right side past Ha Qicai. A very bright future seems on the card for the homegrown U-20 star, who will surely remember this day for a long time.

It all then came apart for the Birds, with Tay Fu Yew replicating Satishchandra's feat in the next five minutes, as the Birds all but forgot how to defend. Bilal Mohammad Harun came on for Chia with about a minute left as Tian Yonghang was all out of ideas - and a lot shorter on options than a month before.
