Künzler Can Do
Grilled Birds managed to complete their Supporter Week Trophy run with a neutral 5-0-5 record, with the always-reliable
Cyril Künzler scoring in all three games on the third and last day, helping the Birds to win two of them. They had a nervy start against former Maldives Consolation Cup winners Musō-ka, with
Gilbert Webb all but inviting Tobias Schicklgruber past him with a laughable shout for offside, but Künzler's cool 16th minute opener paved the way for a 5-1 thumping.
A 3-4 loss against the yellow shirts of Nikomatra followed, as the Dutch fourth divisioners came from behind twice, before Guus Molenaar shot them into the lead with a banger from the left. A controversial penalty was then awarded in the 65th minute for repeated encroachment by Grilled players, and Robert-Jan de Hondt would oddly be substituted immediately after converting it. Second half substitute
Islom Davlatov got Grilled hopes up with a slick 70th minute chip, only to be sent off shortly after.
Liechtenstein Rzeszów, Polish Rubinowy Puchar Drugiej Szansy winners of two seasons prior, would be 2-0 up through Benoît Luca and Kwabena Mumuni by the 41st minute, but the Birds would astonishingly be level before half-time.
Chan Ze Han - who had only started thanks to Davlatov's suspension - exhibited the full mercurial range of his genius, and that was enough to set Grilled on the path to a 4-2 victory - fittingly bookended by a Künzler special free-kick from all of thirty yards.
"Cyril is probably the most indispensable of us all." Grilled centreback
Yuta Nakakita praised. "He's an attacking outlet, free-kick king and dependable calming influence, rolled into one."
The Buns would finish a point ahead, though they lost their final two games. Romanian H.I. club FCM Cozia were not too much of an obstacle, as their rigid tactical adherence gave the Buns ample opportunity to counterattack their way to a 3-0 result. Danish veteran midfielder Sander Bundgaard held the fort admirably, but it was all over once
Sofian Azfar breached their goal in the 67th minute.
They then shot blanks against Italian Division Four club Navy Juniors, with a dead ball setup always likely to tip the balance, in a meeting of two such defensively-minded teams. Plínio Serpa Lopes indeed opened for the Juniors from a 26th minute corner, and they would be able to fully commit to protecting their lead once Czech wingman Vít Nyč made it two.
There were more goals against Romanian team Petrolul1924, though the majority of those would belong to them, thanks to forward Dorian Jendrzejczak being in exceptional form.
Tham Leng Teck caught the eye with a cheeky bit of skill to get past Mauro Panattoni and score in the fourth minute, but Jendrzejczak and company had Petrolul1924 4-1 up by the break.
Jon Benson pulled it back to 4-3 with ten minutes left, but Andrea Virdis cancelled that outright the very next minute.
Contrariwise, Grilled International would wind up a point behind the Birds, with a 4-2-4 record. Their first game against Estonian fifth division winners Banger After Banger belonged wholly to
Fausto Perono, who ran up a hat-trick by the 18th minute, though it admittedly included a penalty. Perono would add one more from open play in the 69th, before
Tommy Dongelmans rounded off the scoring in great style.
There would then be a walkover against Polish Division Six side MKS Pogoń-Sokół Lubaczów, which then led into a 0-1 defeat to Belgian Division Six challengers Ploeg Van 'T Stad. Defender Arne Haerden would scramble a goal from a drawn-out breakaway in the 21st minute, and Ploeg's five-man backline would manage to stand firm for the remainder of the not-exceedingly-enticing game.
