Nigerian Adventure

Chicken Wings graduate Phua Liang Soon, 17, chose the path less taken, as he accepted an offer from Nigerian Third Division club Goal Diggers FC to fill in at midfield. Not a few had expected him to join Napoli side Sleal Madrid, where he would at least have a fairly large support group of former Grilled and Singaporean players, but Phua would wind up putting his trust in Diggers gaffer Charles Johnson.

Phua admitted that a few Wings coaches had advised him to pick the European destination, but he had overriden them out of a desire to taste upper-division football as soon as possible.

"Sleal are a good team, but Diggers are just two leagues from the Premiership - I can't look past that." Phua explained. "They have also assured me that I should be able to hit the ground running, and there's not much that can compare to that."
