Kohei Given Break
Academy midfielder
Kohei Okuya, 19, who racked up ten goals in 31 appearances with the Chicken Wings, signed a seldom-awarded part-time contract with the senior side today, nearly five months after his official graduation.
Djan Bacelar confirmed that it was one of the longest periods that a youngster had been in limbo before being recruited.
"Kohei had been training with the reserves while looking for a new club, but while he hadn't had much luck on that end, the coaches have reported that his work ethic was second to none." Bacelar said. "We didn't really have a spot for him then, but eventually came to an understanding over his role."
This refusal to give up has been a trademark of the third-generation Japanese-Singaporean, who initially applied to haha u21 - who coincidentally have just played a friendly with the Rancher Rabbits - only to lock up during his trial. He responded with six weeks of ardent self-training, and went on to wow the hardened Tham Beng Li with his on-pitch intensity.
While Kohei won the Number 38 jersey, close friend Tarun Phadnis has decided to seek greener pastures, after trying out the pro lifestyle for several days. The eighteen year-old forward was realistic about his chances. "I think it's not for me, and I won't regret the decision." he announced. Phadnis will be pursuing his college studies in business abroad.
