Rearguard Solved
Just a day after the disappointment over Björn Mörnborg, Grilled Birds engaged in what must have been the biggest transfer coup of their history, nabbing the hugely experienced
Jörgen Falkbo for under S$3.3 million.
Club officials traded high-fives with each other after concluding the deal with Falkbo's agent, as Division Three ironside fc of Falkbo's birthplace Stockholm neglected to up their initial offer for the strong 31 year-old. "Falkbo's worth five mil, easy," junior director Jack Ong slurred. "Comparable defenders like Frenchman Gabriel Guenet and Swedes Calle Knutsson and Fredrik Persson all cost that much or more. It was the perfect bargain for the club."
Indeed, Falkbo's previous employers Architekto di fubòl had spent a round S$6 million on him less than a month ago, while they were still known as The Kwekking Ducks. Before that, Falkbo had a short stint with Spanish Cup holders Ancestrales, who had in turn gotten him from illustrious Hungarian team Hali. Incredibly, Falkbo was a key figure in Hali's Hungarian Cup victory, though he was substituted twenty minutes into the final against Flying Shamans.
Prior to that, Falkbo had loyally served his mother club Hobbelitos for over ten seasons in Divisions Three and Four of the difficult Swedish league, amassing a wealth of experience. "He's an absolute treasure," Grilled coach
Luis Alcántara bubbled. "With more top-end matches than any two other players at Grilled put together, he'll be a godsend in defence. We can't wait to begin the season now."
