Sid Slips Off
Grilled bid farewell to one of their most-storied defenders, and certainly their highest-scoring one. Polishman Sylweriusz "Sid" Zywczyn left with a century of goals to his name, fifty-six in the S-League and forty-four in the cups, not including two in qualifiers.
Always a threat from free-kicks, and near-perfect from the penalty spot, the technically-gifted Sid was nevertheless not noted for reliability in defence. This was excusable when he had the speed to recover from errors, but age has caught up with him, and his thirty-five year old legs have let him down once too many.
"Old Sid's a legendary fullback, but frankly he's a passenger now at right-back." longtime fan Rong Xin posted on the club's messageboard, echoing popular sentiment. "He's got to make the right decision before it is made for him."
Sid did so, handing in a transfer request, and after prolonged negotiations the club moved him on to the Spanish league for S$1.5 million, where he will play for Morochas in the fifth division. Grilled coach Liehner meanwhile dismissed suggestions that he grab a replacement, given Grilled's precarious financial situation; he will instead seek to convert Árva to a wide man.
