Wings Reign Gibus
There might be no titles for the senior clubs this season, but the Chicken Wings youth team would ensure that there would be some league silverware, by topping the six-team Les Gibus on 27 points. They had confirmed the title before hosting German U-20 team blacksad young guns at The Green Gridiron on Friday night, and won 4-2 despite a sixth minute incident that had Polat Çeliköz off with a bad thigh sprain, and Ong Chao Woon score an own goal from the ensuing free-kick.
The pacy Samuel Jannik Eichhorn then made the most of his impressive acceleration to skin Zaini Zainuddin Junaidi for 2-0 in the 25th minute, but Wings Number Nine Virgil Huang responded immediately with a canny run in behind the BYG defence. Boris Nhan and Lim Chang Leng then struck within a minute of each other in the second half, before Virgil Huang capped a great day with a sidewinder to Silvio Meidericher's far post, in the 73rd minute.
"It was a wonderful team effort there." Wings captain and centreback Lim Chang Leng, who has reportedly gotten into a few shortlists already, said. "I may not be here for much longer, but I'll remember these times fondly!"
While some leave, others arrive, and the Rancher Rabbits would welcome 15 year-old wing trainee Darrell Watson from their latest series of trials today. Darrell is the younger brother of 22 year-old TSKFC player Mitchell, whose career is however on hold after the Sentosa outfit - formerly of V.63 - fell into administration late last year.
Undaunted, the Sentosa Cove resident would audition for Young Killers Football Club a couple of months ago, only to be turned down. "Darrell's a bit raw, no doubt." Rabbits scout Tong Han Kong admitted. "But we think he's a possible gem in the rough, and are ready to do right by him."
