Perfect Ascension
All that preparation and accumulated teambuilding finally paid off big for Grilled Birds, as they stormed to promotion by winning all of their league games, along with a monstrous +62 goal difference. Phantasm Hotspurs, who spoilt the Birds' party so cruelly last term, came closest by beating all the other clubs, only to lose narrowly in both head-to-head contests. The architect of this legendary season would then be Icelandic striker Gústav Thoroddsen, who claimed the incredible record of scoring in all competitive matches that he started and finished... and of course, the league Golden Boot.
Grilled Birds would have to look elsewhere for a challenge, then, and they would find it in the cups, where they were first knocked out of the main competition 3-4 by S-League entrants Moeinsingapore, and then in the Sapphire Challenger Cup by II.3 club All Stars Team. That the Birds ran both close boded well for the club's future, definitely, as there proved to be very stiff competition for midfield spots. Former national youth stars Chad Thach, Chia Kwang Tse and Mohd Marzuki Khairul would start barely more than half the available matches at most, as Hwang Teck Fu leapfrogged them in Tian Yonghang's reckoning for much of the season thanks to his near-superhuman commitment in training. The jostling for starting positions would be reflected by the players' collective hunger in actual games, exemplified by their defeating Controlar away 4-3 despite the talismanic Thoroddsen being sent off early.
There would be no additions to the Birds squad for once, but one could hardly fault Tian from not wanting to mess with a smoothly-purring engine, and perhaps the beginning of another classic Birds setup. The pending departure of a number of holdovers from Grilled's S-League-winning bunch would serve as a morbid reminder of the transience of a footballer's prime, though, and Tian should be looking at shoring up the defence soon enough.
Farmer Bunnies did not manage to defend their title as they wound up two points behind Brighton UK at the finishing line, which was their own fault after they failed to defeat Really McCoys in the final round, despite FC Phondle lending them a hand by stopping Brighton at home. Although their defence could hardly be criticized, having conceded only three goals in their fourteen league matches, their six draws would eventually cost them despite their ending the campaign undefeated like the Birds. 36 year-old target man Ho Ah Kian led the team in scoring with but six goals, which would be recognized by the supporters as a lingering concern.
The Buns would be far less impressive in cup competition, where they bowed out at the second hurdle each time - first 1-3 to Cantonat FC, and then 0-1 to league rivals Brighton UK, who rode Rafael Maria Silva Barroso's early breakthrough to the finish. The season-ending generation tournament would then see them reprise their stinginess in disallowing any and all goals until the final match, whereby The Sing Tigers finally had their way.
International's pattern of groundhog seasons continued with the fans not even bothering to protest Didi Reidenbach any longer, with the team managing a credible away draw against eventual leaguewinners Amelinho Kickers, before finishing third. An admirable 5-2-0 record in the Division Battle aside, it was far from pretty for International, who were dumped out of the Hattrick International Cup 1-5 by Suriname's Olli Town in the second round, before lasting three more in the secondary Ruby competition before being whipped 4-0 by French H.I. IV.44 club Les Dieux de Géoffroy Guichard. Chua Jun Long's outstanding individual accomplishments would carry on from previous seasons as the Dragon claimed a fifth Player of the Season honour, but whether this dominance is healthy for the squad, remains very much to be seen.
