Stuck In Gear
It was left to Grilled International to carry the silverware torch, as Grilled Birds and Farmer Bunnies went from whooping about Division Two, to scoffing humble pie as they came undone when it mattered.
Both of the above had made it their business to secure promotion, with the Birds further dispensing of longtime head coach Djan Bacelar, towards that end. Up hopped assistant-in-waiting Hovaness Noubaryan into the hot seat, and the Georgian knew exactly what the team lacked - pure attacking quality, in the form of S$12.4 million former U-20 striker Vikram Mudaliar.
Internationals were not what the Buns wanted for, as they counted among their number a good handful of homegrown Lions. Sikong Darong wasn't one to pass up on reinforcing his squad, however, and in came Saudi forward Ibrahim Zahran Al-Maashany to help their weakest department, as the ageing Liderhan Kadyr bowed out.
Similar strategies brought similar trajectories, as both then romped their first two league matches, before hitting a bump in their next two, as their supposed dominance failed to show. The Birds were held against newbies, before -Blitz- mercilessly sliced them apart at home. As for the Buns, it was more a continued lack of firepower, as they couldn't translate their strong foundations into wins, against M4 United and Soon Soon.
Excellent winning streaks however saw them well-poised going into the final stretch, but there they stumbled again, with eventual champions -Blitz- and Soon Soon hitting where it hurt.
On the contrary, it was far better for Grilled International, who figured VI.113 out on their fourth try. None could withstand them as they exploded to a perfect record, with an incredible Micky bin Kadir capturing a second Golden Boot in wonderful style.
