Treading Water
All of Grilled's pre-season promise was blown away as they repeated their worst start of all time, garning zero points from their opening three matches. While the Birds might have been unlucky to lose by one-goal margins to newbies and Changi, they were woefully exposed in a 4-0 defeat to heimu XI, and only a completely unexpected turnaround against Cup-chasing Arrogancae saved beleaguered coach Han Lik-Tsun then.
Neither were they even convincing in the Cup, barely scraping through the fourth round on penalties, and falling after that to Division Three side Hertz United. In contrast, the other competitors in the league went far despite formidable performances on the weekends, with CharlesCheesePie finishing third after a semifinal appearance, and Arrogancae eventually lifting their first Singapore Cup.
Grilled did manage a prized double against Arrogancae as they laboured at the foot of the table for much of the season, but they missed great opportunities to haul themselves out of the mire as they drew with both heimu XI and Changi as time threatened to run out.
A last-ditch Tian Yonghang-inspired win against newbies did the trick and denied newbies their first shot at the big time, but Grilled still had to face the challenge of the impressive Rapala FC. It looked all for naught as Grilled played catch-up for the first hour, but their young legs finally won out by six goals to three.
Speaking of young legs, assistant coach Luis Alcántara did at least report sizeable improvements in the skill level of his young talents, who learnt much from such celebrated opponents such as =FC Zenit Spb=, who have captured ten major domestic trophies, and two-time Yemeni champions, Angry Wolfes. They will have to grow up quick if Grilled are to hang on to Division Two football, by the looks of it.
This future promise was not enough to save Han's job, though the former national defender and Grilled skipper had also been looking for an out after enduring the stress of being in the hot seat for four long seasons. His handpicked successor Niculae Stanca took over the mammoth task of navigating Grilled's way back to the top flight, in an orderly transition.
