Unprecedented Defense
Grilled became the first Singaporean side to repeat their Cup-winning feat in consecutive seasons, an achievement that owned much to the stability in the squad.
The initial rounds were quite a breeze, and Grilled entered the midseason Hattrick Masters riding on a string of good results. Jon Andrea Rottman's injury left Grilled light in midfield however, and they were edged in the first round of Hattrick's premier international club competition, 1-2.
What essentially was a walkover against L3gend helped the club recover, and Grilled then axed the Singaporean club with the highest player net worth, jafjfqaoi, five-nil.
Ahmed Abed-Sulaiman was once again Grilled's genie in the bottle when it came down to penalties in the Cup semi-final. Chinablack, try as they might, could not get a single spot kick past the untouchable Egyptian. FC RaZer Infernus defeated All Stars Team in the other semis, to set up a grudge final.
There ended up being little suspense in the big game, after Dutch star Hidde van Liere zoomed around and bagged a first-half hat-trick for the defending Cup holders. FC RaZer Infernus put two back, but Quah and Sid added two too, to make it 5-2 at the end.
It was a superlative performance that won van Liere plaudits as Grilled's Player of the Season, which would otherwise have gone to Sulaiman for his goalkeeping prowness. As van Liere himself remarked, "I guess only a Cup final hat-trick trumps a penalty shootout clean sheet."
Grilled also fought to their best ever S-League finish, second and just four points behind Winning Eleven. Major changes afoot, including captain Jörgen Falkbo's move to Italy and possibly Siu-Yue and Wai-Kin's departure, however threaten to derail Grilled's future efforts.
