Cup Semi-finals
Grilled waded through Singapore's traditionally toughest Division Two league with 32 year-old Swede defender Jörgen Falkbo their only reinforcement at just over three million dollars, only dropping two points in the first half of the season. First place looked a given and attention quickly shifted over to the Cup, where Grilled's fortunes appeared finally to be changing.
The fifth round sent some pulses racing when The Olos United held on at 4-4 with twenty minutes to go, but late strikes from Spirig and Langeland ended the game in regular time. Next opponents Rollin' Thunder were not taken lightly as they had eliminated II.2 leaguemate Cantik FC, and Grilled took no chances with a first team lineup to triumph 1-4 before nearly a hundred thousand spectators in the West derby, with Kek-Tjiang godlike.
Kek-Tjiang may well have retained his title of best player on the basis of his early form, but lost out narrowly to a resurgent Ola Martinsson who returned to his happy hunting grounds. Though he finished second for the Golden Boot, he closed off with 32 goals in all competitions, an average of 1.33 a match. Two seven match scoring streaks and four hat-tricks swayed the judges to his side.
But more on the Cup - Grilled were tested in the round of sixteen by All Stars Team, one of Singapore's wealthiest sides. Martinsson's 77th minute winner settled that, and Grilled steamrolled extreme power 1-5 in the quarterfinals despite having lower possession. van Liere displayed superlative class in patches, which was often enough.
Grilled's luck ran out against a far more experienced Team Singapore in the semi-finals however, and fell 0-3 to the eventual runners-up. They however gained automatic promotion back to the top flight by a large margin, and it remains to be seen where their priorities will lie this time.
