Against All Odds
The Birds gave their greatest foes FC RaZer Infernus another reason to carry on their feud, as they held out for the narrow victory they needed despite RaZer's control of the match.
The tone for the contest was set very early on, as the visitors' Peter Patel went in extremely hard on Hidde's replacement,
Terkel Borup. The Danish lad, who had already been the victim of one such cynical challenge this season, stayed down for a minute, but with great effort of will forced himself to continue.
RaZer were intent on getting the ball to German star René Winckler as often as possible, knowing that he was the only true winger on display. It looked bleak for Grilled as
Lorenz Paullin went down clutching his ankle in the 21st minute, but at least Grilled had strength of depth in midfield, and Jie Siong slotted in invisibly.
There wasn't much of note as both teams feared to concede the first goal, but RaZer needed one while Grilled didn't. This made all the difference as RaZer's hand was forced as the match trundled on, and they began to leave holes behind as they pushed up in search of that all-important breakthrough.
Grilled hung back as much as they dared, and managed to get Wang Wee-Hwa booked at the beginning of the second half, as Martinsson threw himself to the ground dramatically after Wang approached. That bit of playacting wasn't appreciated by the RaZer players, and Martinsson made it a point to escape from the scene of the crime as soon as possible.
The hammer fell when Sid sent his free-kick into the roof of the net, and now RaZer had to score two to overhaul Grilled. They didn't manage even one, however, and will now spend the next season in the second division.
