Run & Gand

Glory Paradiso weren't all that far off upsetting Grilled Birds on their Woodlands home ground today, and in any case it was a clear improvement over the 1-7 loss they had suffered earlier in the season, with much the same tactics. Grilled pulled through eventually, though, and for that they have to thank Gandhik Chitre, who more or less single-handedly turned the game around in the last six minutes.
Marquee forward Gilbert Chung would return to the fray for Paradiso after missing the last fixture through injury, though Jacob Yamada remained out after mysteriously falling out of favour with Hungarian head coach Pavao Prgeša. Paradiso had never been short on strikers, however, and in Ramón Fox and Alex Duncan, they would boast a much stronger midfield than they had taken to The Cooking Pot, together with their first-string defence.

Grilled Birds would start Damian Hutter at the back with doubts over Hong Kang Leong's mobility no longer being able to be ignored, but other than that, it was a pretty standard XI; Prgeša would pull an unexpected swap immediately after kick-off, as he pulled veteran fullback Ler Yun Qiang for former Colombian youth international Jose Andrés Escalante. No explanation was forthcoming, and the supporters could only swallow their doubts, as they watched the match unfold in the ongoing drizzle.

It would be slow going with Grilled having the intent to go on the offensive, but not the suitable conditions, as they were soon largely reduced to lumping towards their strikers from their own half. One of these hopeful passes would be cut out by Fox in the 27th minute, and the ensuing direct counter was finished off by Gilbert Chung with a drilled drive from the right. The cheers had yet to die down when Gandhik Chitre quietly took it through the Paradiso defence to level up - an early hint as to how tight today's contest would turn out to be.

The hosts would respond all the more strongly, as it turned out, as they raised their 5-2-3 to an artform. Bypassing the clogged midfield whenever possible, Paradiso would exploit their right wing heavily with Idhlan Abdul Fattah stretching Ha Qicai and Jose Andrés Escalante overlapping with abandon, and a cross by the latter would be met by Ajwad Mohd Raimi's soaring header in the 35th minute. A third goal followed swiftly, as Mah Lee Kim was played inside by a clever Fattah change of direction, and he smashed it between Dimitris Germanakos' legs on the first touch.

Some teams would have crumbled at that twin setback, but Grilled were made of sterner stuff - and used to just doing their own thing anyhow. This saw Chia Kwang Tse spring Paradiso's lazy offside trap four minutes later, but his strike was placed straight at goalkeeper Ang Fu. Play would be pulled back due to Mah Lee Kim having scythed Brian Reddy down in the prior build-up, however, and the restart saw Reddy put it into the middle... where Lim An Keng controlled well and then volleyed it home for 3-2.

The roughhousing was not over as Aw Keng Chuan caught Ajwad Mohd Raimi on his right knee as the Paradiso forward stretched for a drifting long pass from kick-off, which left referee Víctor Baldenaches to maintain order as the game threatened to boil over. A card for Aw to match Mah's would lower temperatures somewhat, but Baldenaches nevertheless saw fit to blow for half-time as soon as Jonathan Yang had come off, to allow the players time to cool off.

As with the first half, both teams took their time to get going again, and it was not until the 70th minute that the second half even saw its first real attempt on goal - a wild right-footed effort from Mah Lee Kim that came nowhere close. This provided the distraction that Grilled were looking for, and a quick throw out by Germanakos released Chia down the middle, where he then found Paulino Trindade coming in from the left.

The home fans raised the volume at that as they sensed the game slipping away, as Tian Yonghang then made a bold tactical sub in pulling his goalscorer off for a fresh Chad Thach. Thach was definitely full of running as he spread chaos through Paradiso's stronger right side, and if Ang Fu had been less assured, Brian Reddy would have put it in next. Alas, Fu managed the block, and it was Ramón Fox to put Paradiso ahead a third time on the counterattack instead.

This sure looked bad for a tiring Grilled team, who had Reddy booked for a messy tackle on Escalante soon after the restart. Thach for one was not going to roll over, thankfully, and he was desperately unlucky to have his shot come off the bar, after a determined charge. Paradiso would try to hunker down and pass it about the back after that scare, which turned out to be a bad decision, as Gandhik Chitre somehow stripped Mah of the ball in the 84th minute, before squeezing it in at the far post with his other foot off his next stride.

Paradiso never quite recovered mentally from that, and when Chitre made another surging dribble from the right wing two minutes later, none of the defenders seemed at all eager to close him down. True, they might have Brian Reddy's accompanying run as an excuse, but it would all count for naught once Chitre flashed past the last man and clipped it past Ang Fu, for his first professional hat-trick in the league.
