Zeedijk Warriors trundled out to the pitch in a 5-4-1 formation. The visitors, Grilled Birds, chose to start the game with a 2-5-3 lineup. Like the adage Grilled clearly preferred using their mythical (17) ability to attack in the middle today. A wonderful trick by
Gandhik Chitre after 2 minutes left
Sergio Karijodinomo bewildered and really deserved to end in a goal but the keeper made a fine save. It was obvious that Grilled had instructions to attack in the middle when they directed a break on the wing into the center of the park. Warriors almost scored after a counter-attack 5 minutes into the match, but
Ricardo Djoekasan took a shot from the left that landed harmlessly in the side netting. After 29 minutes, Warriors were awarded a free kick as their counter-attack broke down. The set piece fell right at the target man's feet, but he was taken by surprise, having expected his marker to clear the ball out, and made a mess of the finish. Grilled took the lead after 33 minutes making the score 0 - 1. The keeper had no chance on
Chan Ze Han's fine volley fromleft of the net after a cross from the right. The teams went for the halftime break at 0 - 1. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Grilled would have 60 percent possession in this half was spot on!
46 minutes into the match, the referee signaled for a Grilled substitution.
Lim An Keng came on for
Kalki Parvathaneni. After more pushing and shoving than a pack of helicopter moms trying to get the last appointment for their snowflakes to see the Easter Bunny, Warriors's
Geremi Feutmba finally got himself booked for a foul. Big paper red cards were being held up by the opposing supporters with 73 minutes on the clock after
Garry Tammenga's mistimed tackle from behind. The referee only showed the Warriors player a yellow card though. After 75 minutes, the Grilled coach wanted to see a new face on the field, waving
Moey Xin Seng off.
Teo Chuan Yong took his place. The crowd chanted their encouragement as Warriors's
Ricardo Djoekasan came in from the right after 77 minutes and put the ball in the net to even the score at 1 - 1. The referee showed Grilled's
Bhavya Panigrahi the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. Feeling like a boy about to meet his girlfriend's father for the first time, the inexperienced Warriors struggled to maintain their level of play after 85 minutes. The fourth official announced that there would be 1 minutes of stoppage time, giving fans a slim hope that their team could get one more attack in before this was all over. Grilled's
Gandhik Chitre gave the visitors a 1 - 2 lead after 89 minutes with a superb strike from the right. The match ends 1 - 2. Grilled had the upper hand in possession, maintaining an impressive 58 percent possession of the ball.
Most important Warriors player was
Geremi Feutmba. You can tell it was nickel beer night yesterday at the local bar because
Vijay Kulkarni seemed to stumble all over the pitch. Grilled's top performer was clearly
Chan Ze Han. Even six year old fans were wincing at the poor play by
Enrique Baena today.
