Grilled 2 - 2 GUFC

We had overcast weather free of rain at the stadium today. Lineup: Salmiņš - Panigrahi, Webb - Xin Lee, Chuan Yong, Mazhud, Mohammad Harun, Dong Chu - Ze Han, Mudaliar, Xin Seng.

They fielded: Lovell - Canser, Isham, Quinn, Lampard, Hioolen - West Nielsen, Al-Kelabi, Fink - Ceylan, Ljubinković.

Grilled Birds trundled out to the pitch in a 2-5-3 formation. The visitors, Gibbo Utd, chose to start the game with a 5-3-2 lineup. Grilled went for a narrow approach, using their divine (+6) (26) ability to focus their attacks down the middle. GUFC's game plan was to sit back and absorb the pressure, then use their extra-terrestrial (16) ability to break on the counter whenever possible. At the 11 minute mark, GUFC's Ragıp Canser surprised the visitors with a 40 yard pass to Dagbjart West Nielsen who easily found the back of the net, bringing the score to 0 - 1. Central attacks were the recipe of the day for Grilled, and they were successfully passing the ball from the wing into the middle at the behest of their coach. A series of fine plays up the middle should have led to a goal for Grilled, but Bilal Mohammad Harun's shot went over the bar. With the clock showing 19 minutes played, a great pass from the defensive line of GUFC resulted in a counter-attack that was smoothly brought under control by Vladan Ljubinković in the center of the opposition's penalty area, but his finish went high. Chan Ze Han pulled a rabbit out of his hat as he wove through the guest's entire central defense and put the 1 - 1 equalizer away after 25 minutes. Many thought Abd Hadi Taib Mazhud ought to have been awarded a penalty 28 minutes into the match, as he went down trying to beat Ben Lovell after an attack through the middle gave him the one-on-one opportunity. GUFC showed their counter-attacking skill 29 minutes into the match by breaking through the middle, with Allan Fink scoring an easy goal for 1 - 2. Abd Hadi Taib Mazhud was just a finger's width away from an equalizer for Grilled with a strike from the left, but Ben Lovell managed to deflect the shot out for a corner. The crowd roared in delight as Heng Dong Chu finished off a spectacular series of plays up the middle to even the score for Grilled after 37 minutes. 2 - 2. 2 - 2 was the halftime score. Grilled set the tempo, maintaining 88 percent of possession.

After 51 minutes, the defensive line of GUFC created a counter-attack through the middle that gave Vladan Ljubinković a good look at goal, but his shot glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. 60 minutes into the game, Grilled wanted to bring some new energy to their game. Heng Dong Chu gave Kalki Parvathaneni a quick hug as he left the field. Grilled were awarded a penalty 73 minutes into the game but Bhavya Panigrahi took a poor shot, quite easily saved by Ben Lovell. After a fine move down the middle Moey Xin Seng nearly put the home side one up with 77 minutes played. His final touch escaped him though and the keeper smothered the ball. With the clock showing 80 minutes, the fourth official held up the substitution board. Chu Xin Lee looked to see that it was his number in red, so he made his way over to the sideline and swapped out for Salah Kamel, though he would have liked to continue. Good work by GUFC's defensive line after 83 minutes produced a good counter-attack chance, one of which cut elegantly down the middle of the field and found Dagbjart West Nielsen alone in front of the goal, but his shot whistled just wide. Feeling like a boy about to meet his girlfriend's father for the first time, the inexperienced GUFC struggled to maintain their level of play after 84 minutes. Against a lesser team, Grilled could very well have succeeded with their smart indirect free kick combination after 85 minutes. A trio of passes took the ball all the way past the defenders, but by then the intended recipient was blocked off and the keeper could make a leisurely save. As the match nears its end, the referee deemed it appropriate to add 2 minutes as stoppage time. The match ends 2 - 2. Well, look at this! Cardi B is on the Enormotron in naught but giant sunglasses, red tassles, and a Holy Hand Grenades of Antioch tank top. I've not seen anything like it before. Grilled's top performer was clearly Chan Ze Han. I can't remember Kalki Parvathaneni ever having a worse night than he just had. Ben Lovell performed admirably for GUFC. Even six year old fans were wincing at the poor play by Adnan Al-Kelabi today.
