Catrachos 5 - 4 Grilled

The spectators at the stadium today were in for an afternoon of sunshine. The intense heat made it hard for players relying on strength or speed to shine. On the other hand, it provided perfect conditions for the more technical players. They fielded: Changanian - De la Cruz, Maniero - Cesar, Moreno, McDonald, Alonzo, Fedorov - Martikainen, Alexis, Hein.

The following players had been selected: Salmiņš - Carapaica, Webb - Kamel, Chuan Yong, ter Berg, Mohammad Harun, Dong Chu - Ze Han, Egan, Xin Seng.

The teams stopped and stared at each other - it was like they were looking in a mirror, since they both lined up in a 2-5-3 formation. Grilled mostly ignored the flanks in favor of their divine (+6) (26) ability to attack in the middle. Grilled took the lead after 4 minutes making the score 0 - 1. The keeper had no chance on Salah Kamel's fine volley fromleft of the net after a cross from the right. With 29 minutes played, Catrachos's Panu-Petteri Martikainen made a rush down the left, leaving him free to put the 1 - 1 equalizer away. This was a good period for the visitors, with several opportunities to take the lead, particularly when Bernie Egan slipped through the left defense to come up alone against Farbod Changanian, but the home side's keeper showed his lightning-fast reflexes. Grilled will have to work out a different routine for indirect free kicks. Though it looked well-rehearsed, their play after 36 minutes was easily anticipated by the opposition and the attackers simply had nowhere to go. The game had been going for 37 minutes when Junior Cesar came in on the right, feinted, then sped past the off-balance defender to put away the 2 - 1 goal, giving Catrachos the lead. Catrachos added another goal to their lead as Alexandre Hein struck home for 3 - 1 after an attack from the left set him up unmarked in front of the keeper. 3 - 1 was the score after the first half. Grilled had the upper hand in possession, maintaining an impressive 54 percent possession of the ball.

46 minutes into the match, the referee signaled for a Grilled substitution. Chu Xin Lee came on for Kalle ter Berg. Central attacks were the recipe of the day for Grilled, and they were successfully passing the ball from the wing into the middle at the behest of their coach. Grilled never say die, and though it wasn't a pretty goal, Salah Kamel offered the visiting fans a glimmer of hope after 48 minutes. That makes it 3 - 2. After 58 minutes, Jake Moreno put Catrachos ahead 4 - 2 when he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. The Catrachos free kick 59 minutes into the match seemed wasted, as the shot was both short and off target. But it was no mistake - Constantin Maniero seemingly came out of nowhere and had miles of space to control the ball and pick his spot. That's 5 - 2! Catrachos's José Alonzo was shown a yellow card after 61 minutes for slicing down an opponent. Everyone had expected a shot from the free kick 74 minutes into the game, but Grilled sent the ball sideways instead, giving Bernie Egan a clear look at goal with no wall in his way. He sent it through the keeper's legs for 5 - 3! 75 minutes into the game, Grilled wanted to bring some new energy to their game. Gilbert Webb gave Sølve Lunde a quick hug as he left the field. As Gilbert Webb left the field, the coach signaled to Teo Chuan Yong to be the new set pieces taker. The fourth official announced that there would be 2 minutes of stoppage time, giving fans a slim hope that their team could get one more attack in before this was all over. Grilled players heard their coach's words ringing in their ears and steered their wing attacks to the middle instead. With 89 minutes played, Grilled showed they hadn't given up and were able to reduce the score to 5 - 4 when Moey Xin Seng got past the home side's central defenders right in front of the goal. Alexandre Hein was not content with his team's lead, and tried to extend it 90 minutes into the game after a nice run through the middle, but his shot went wide. The match ends 5 - 4. Grilled set the tempo, maintaining 55 percent of possession.

Most important Catrachos player was Alexandre Hein. Even six year old fans were wincing at the poor play by Constantin Maniero today. Grilled's best player was Chan Ze Han. You can tell it was nickel beer night yesterday at the local bar because Salah Kamel seemed to stumble all over the pitch.
